Microsoft May Retire Wavy Windows Logo

Microsoft first introduced its four-color Windows logo over two decades ago with the launch of Windows 3.0 in May 1990 and it's been waving ever since. It's been altered over the years, with the Redmond software giant adding color gradients, shading, reflections, and other artistry tidbits to maintain a modern flair, but with the launch of Windows 8, the familiar logo might undergo a somewhat radical makeover.

Now, it is official:
Redesigning the Windows Logo

It’s a window… not a flag

With Windows 8, we approached the logo redesign with a few key goals on mind.

1. We wanted the new logo to be both modern and classic by echoing the International Typographic Style (or Swiss design) that has been a great influence on our Metro style design philosophy. Using bold flat colors and clean lines and shapes, the new logo has the characteristics of way-finding design systems seen in airports and subways.

2. It was important that the new logo carries our Metro principle of being “Authentically Digital”. By that, we mean it does not try to emulate faux-industrial design characteristics such as materiality (glass, wood, plastic, etc.). It has motion – aligning with the fast and fluid style you’ll find throughout Windows 8.

3. Our final goal was for the new logo to be humble, yet confident. Welcoming you in with a slight tilt in perspective and when you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you. It is a “Personal” Computer after all.
I like this little twist. great job Microsoft. :)

New windows logo

So do you guys like the new Windows 8 logo that just came out?
It looks like this:
6201.Win8Logo_5F00_01_5F00_thumb_5F00_23669D8A.jpg
And here is the blog post to prove it: Windows Blog

It feels like a downgrade to me. Maybe they are just trying to restore the classic feel of a window for a logo.

It looks very similar to the Windows 1.0 logo, but it also fits metro. What are they going to do about all of the Window logos on keyboards? Let's hear how you feel.

New Windows 8 logo confirmed by Microsoft

We have earlier seen new Windows 8 logo posted by various sites online, now Microsoft has officially confirmed it on Windows Team Blog that Windows 8 would indeed have a new logo all styled in blue color. The blog post states that this new logo would indeed reflect the metro style design principles which is indeed used by Microsoft in almost every product. Here is what they have to say about the logo-

I feel.............ouch. Wow, this is a genuine shock for me. But at least they didn't cut out the Start button entirely.

Wow, I...I don't know. I get the concept behind the design of it, but gee willakers! It's...more retro and less metro. I would had figured Microsoft would had gone with a white/monochrome flag to match the charms icons and have it reflect the color changes of the Start Screen to reflect on the flag and charms icons.

Now, the question I have to ask is, 1) what is to happen with EVERY single Start key on keyboards and Windows 7 slates and looking odd and 2) what will this mean for Windows Phone 8? I almost feel like that Windows Phone 8 will not be an upgrade option for Windows Phone 7 users mostly because of the white Start flag every handset has.

I...........WOW. I don't know if the Windows Division seems to understand metro design. It's not really supposed to have more retro tones, it's supposed to be simple, clean, based on typography, and vibrant in its design; not something that is more nostalgic retro than anything....

Odd? That design is somewhat a watered down version of the keyboard logo on ALL HP laptops, and keyboards (Windows key)
Actually in my opinion the B&W Windows key logo that HP uses is better looking than the one Microsoft decided on. Is it me, or does
the logo they decided on look like 4 boxes stacked 2 side by side, or just a plus sign inside a box?

Wow, that's a lot different from what I'm used to. To be honest, I think they can just keep the current Windows logo. All they have to do is make it look a little more modern and it's ready for a new OS. To go for a whole new logo might be pushing it.

As Microsoft prepares for the launch of Windows 8, the new version of its operating system, it has announced a bold new identity that takes the iconic Windows logo back to its roots—as a window. Designed by Pentagram’s Paula Scher, the logo re-imagines the familiar four-color symbol as a modern geometric shape that introduces a new perspective on the Microsoft brand.

Meeting with Microsoft early in the development process, Scher asked: “Your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?”

New Windows 8 logo confirmed by Microsoft

Earlier in February, Internet leaks showed that Microsoft was creating a new Windows logo for the launch of Windows 8. At the time of the reports, Microsoft didn't confirm or deny any plans to change the logo and some writers even said it was a hoax. Today, Microsoft revealed that the reports were true and that it was indeed redesigning the logo for Windows 8.

I think this work a little better for a logo I think, it's modern but keeps the classic red, green, blue, yellow coloring and it also looks like a window. :)
