Microsoft is bringing the Start Menu back

Millions asked for it, and Microsoft is providing it: the old Start Menu is coming back. Kind of. At its Build conference today, Microsoft announced a new Start Menu that looks like a hybrid of the best of Windows 7 and Windows 8. It's around the same size as the Windows 7 menu, but also features miniature Live Tiles along one side.

Hi there
This app probably isn't worth persevering with any more.

Windows 8.1 update 1 can run the shutdown from the Windows button at the bottom left of the screen (right mouse click) and Ms seems to be preparing us for a few updates later on in the year including a CLASSICAL start menu.

The run and Search also are quite useful.

Cheers
jimbo

That was added in 8.1

Never did like the old Start Menu from W7 as looking for a shortcut was a pain. Used Desktop Icons or Task Bar for most things. The refinements in W8.1 are a lot better and I will not go back. I boot to the Desktop and use the right click on the Start Button a lot. My Start Screen has about 65 tiles on one page arranged in groups of my choice. Easy to find what I want. Now if I could just change the color of the tiles.

It would be nicer if it scrolled vertically.

I use a Track Ball and find it easier to scroll left and right.

Jim, check out thread at:

I have changed all my tiles on StartScreen - but not with Micorosoft's help. Changing the color of the Start tiles is wanted by a lot of users, but MS isn't listening.

It's not even necessary to use trackball, mouse wheel scrolls it left and right but I would still like vertical. like in All Apps, where is just too cluttered.

That was my thread. I was able to change some but not all of the tiles and eventually just got frustrated with the whole proccess. Not to mention once you change the system tiles (weather, mail, etc) you lose the live tile. Just a frustrating mess that would have been easy to keep if MS so desired, kinda like the start menu hack in the betas....
