Microsoft extends the expiration of Windows 8 Developer Preview

Recently Microsoft has released an update (KB2671501) that extends the evaluation version would be alive through January 15, 2013. The update is available for both Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows 8 Server Developer Preview.

In September of last year, Microsoft officially previewed Windows 8 and offered developers a chance to evaluate and the new Windows platform for a limited time. And the expiration dates were set to March 11, 2012 and April 8, 2012 for Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows 8 Server Developer Preview respectively.

To get this update, Run Windows Update from Control Panel, and then click Check for Updates. After you install this update, Windows automatically tries to reactivate after the restart until activation is successful.
Important: You must install this update to postpone the expiration otherwise the evaluation period will remain as earlier. And you can check the expiration date, by running winver or winver.exe from Start Search, Run Dialog Box or Command Prompt.

While a week ago, Microsoft also announced that Windows 8 Consumer Preview will be released in upcoming Mobile World Congress event to be held in Barcelona, Spain. So I’m sure we don’t need to worry because we will have a new toy to play with.

I'm sure they just extended it because the CP is the same code branch and they are for all intents and purposes setting the CPs expiration date.

......since the DP will auto update to the CP.

I was just about finished with it since I've got a lot of stuff to do and didn't want to put any more effort into a product expiring in 2 or 3 weeks or so.

Now with another YEAR it's fine to go again.

My update worked fine ON TWO machine. Re-boot twice for some reason but it worked.

Incidentally ensure the Date / Time in the BIOS is correct BEFORE applying the update. Check this at BOOT time with your BIOS screen. Then ensure also that the Windows date / time (after boot) agrees with the BOOT or at least consistent with the regional options in Control Panel.

you loose me here, for me it says "expires 16/01/2013". I was under the impression that everyone using Win 8 Dev Preview would let MS install the necessary update's automatically....

So there is no need to install the patch unless like Abhiji who needs help

That's WRONG!! that date is COMING this March, you should have a date of 2013, not 2012!

Rebooting fixed it for me too.

But - what's the outlook for a similar update on the CP/Beta version? If that gives a life of over 12 months then....???

Hi Dave, you need to reboot twice as acer54 and Kevin have done.

The boot twice worked for me.

Mine says 1/15/2013, must be a time zone thing.
