Microsoft cuts Surface Pro tablet prices by $100

Microsoft reduced the price of its Surface Pro tablet this weekend by $100, a few days after revealing that it has spent more money on marketing the in-house tablet than it has generated in revenue.

The reductions, which were first reported by The Verge, cuts the price of Microsoft's 64GB and 128GB tablets to $799 and $899, respectively. The discounts come three weeks after Microsoft cut the price of its Surface RT tablets by 30 percent.

There are too many tablets out there that do more things for the same or a lesser price. Microsoft is late to the dance and what they offer doesn't compete well.

I don't have a need to have a computer nearby everywhere I go. In fact, sometimes it's nice to be someplace without one. I have a netbook that works fine for my portable computing needs. If I were in the market for a tablet I would be shopping by capabilities, future needs, and capacity. Based on what little I know and have seen or experienced, I would not be surprised if neither Apple nor Microsoft came out the winner.

Really? U mad??

Just because you can't do work on your netbook, you have to come to a forum to bash a product?

Come on people. Move on if it doesn't work for you. There are tons of other forums out there where you can praise using multiple devices on different os's.

What problem? This fits many people's needs out there including mine. Maybe not yours cause it seems you want supercar performance for entry level sedan pricing? :haha:

You gotta pay to play. Keep dreaming.

Er, no, I don't want it, period. I will never use anything with metro on it. I have all my mobile needs satisfied nicely by android, as do most people. On the pc, it's traditional desktop environment. That also will not change... unless something truly better comes along. Sadly for microsoft... metro is not it...

As do I and it's Windows 8.1. Sadly for you...

Why sadly for me...?? I don't care what you use, what you like... why would I..?? I support your right to voice an opinion that differs from mine.

Back on topic, $899 compared to a similarly equipped ipad at $799 is truly remarkable.

I love how a 128gb ipad makes complete sense.

No, I am not mad, nor am I really "bashing" anything here.

I can do things fine on my netbook and I use it often. I seldom take it anywhere outside the home simply because I don't have a big need for mobile computing.

Based on consumer reaction thus far, I think it's safe to say that I'm not the only person who isn't wowed by the Surface. Maybe if I could justify the cost, and I bought one, I'd like it. Right now, even the $150 RT price drop or $100 price drop for the Pro isn't enough of a lure. For that matter, too, a price drop on the iPad probably wouldn't convince me to buy one, either.

Price is a marketing tool, used to help position the product. If some people perceive they got good value, that is fine.

Sadly for MS not all that many thought it worthwhile. MS got it wrong, but they can try again with their next product offerings.

Here is a feature that made sense for the Surface.
My Wife takes the laptop to her clients, and spends time at their desk doing Accounting.
She does not like the keyboards that come with laptops; she wants to use her Natural Keyboard.
So she pushes the laptop away from her, and then plugs in her wired (or wireless) Natural keyboard.

With the Surface, you can remove the Type keyboard, and place it right behind the Natural keyboard and not lose any space.
This is a good solution for her! The other choice was the Lenovo Yoga, where she could flip the keyboard around and make it work the same. But the Lenovo was also $1050, and not Win 8 PRO, so no savings there...

It sounds like the Surafce worked well for her, and that's a good thing. As I said elsewhere, I've seen people using the Surface tablets and they look pretty cool. That's not enough to make me want to go buy one, but they obviously do meet the needs of some folks.

The true is that Microsoft sold a very few Surface Pro/RT.
You can say what you want but, at the moment, Surface and Win 8 are a big fail.
I also think that Win 8.1 and the Surface 2nd generation won't change this (IMHO)

Big fail to who? It would mean a lot more if it wasn't worth building, but it was because MS needed to get the oem's to take notice and start building better products. There just isn't much out there worth looking at with a 1080p screen that fits the bill. It's about time someone stepped up and showed the world how to make something desirable.

Most people are too dumb to notice tech trends and have no idea what a Pro is capable of.

In the eyes of journalists looking for a good story, yes. It's only a matter of time before people take notice of these and start scooping them up.

Anyway, I wonder WHY Microsoft should drop off the Surface price...

A Surface refresh is already on the roadmap for the next few months. This is actually so far only through Aug. 29th. Looks like a back to school special and at the same time, helps to move a few old stock before they announce new ones.

Sorry but, talking about Surface RT, it doesn't seems (to me) "a few old stock" as you say... 6 millions pieces not sold... I don't know how much is the amount of Surface Pro unsold...
