I'm using Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Pro together in Windows 8.1. They work very well together. Very low overhead, great protection. I have had no virus or malware infections since I started using both. If I try to click on a questionable website, I get a warning message.

I recently tried Kaspersky 2014 along with Malwarebytes Pro. Kaspersky often was taking 100% of the CPU or Hard Disk and no scanning was going on. The same thing happened with Kaspersky on Windows 7 and my Dell Inspiron 1545. After about a week, in each case, I got rid of Kaspersky and re-installed Microsoft Security Essentials or Defender. Our cable provider offers Kaspersky 2014 for free, but it just takes up too many resources for what you get.

I just uninstalled mine and installed new download and all is the same as before. Don't know what happened with your's but if you have a chance to evaluate it, go ahead.

I fixed it. I had to disable the trial. It's now like yours.

I just had reason to install myself and I also almost missed the pre checked box to take up the pro trial, wish they didn't do that sort of thing

Well, it gave me the option to disable the trial through the interface. I didn't have to do any reinstalling. Hopefully, this will help others if they come across it.

There's a lot of those traps placed to trick you to install and buy something else that borders on or crosses borders of "yucky", got to keep on your toes for that.

The first two computers didn't detect any malware, but they did detect unwanted items. All were removed.

One other trap to look out for with software ...

As we have seen it's not unknown for items with a potential cost to be checked by default. There is also the possibility that you will be given more than one option for install, one will be Default or Express Etc, and the other will be Advanced or similar.

I would always advise that the advanced option is selected, and the options presented checked carefully.

These options can include unwanted extras, often browser toolbars, that you may not want. It's not a nice way to get products onto a user system but is becoming more common, You should uncheck any options you do not want, and accept the defaults for the remainder. this method takes longer and not all installs will try this type of thing but it is well worth the check, to prevent potential future issues

Yes, I have learned that. Sometimes, those extra installs will even leave nasty bugs or threats.

Yepperz, I saw an article on that a while back that recommended you should no longer opt for typical install, but custom instead. I have seen it too much of that lately. During every stage of installing software, you should scrutinize the installation window & see if there is an option for customized install. I always opt for the custom since there are just too many hidden items in programs nowadays.

Some software likes to play hide & seek with the customized options, such as a text that barely visible that says custom install or something unrelated like "other." Sometimes you need to do a Google search to see how to access the custom install on some programs. Others give you no option to opt out, & indeed, I have seen a couple programs where the EULA says "You WILL install this third party software or you can not run this program." Anytime you see something like that, abort the installation & steer clear of that program.

I've actually found that this sort of sneak attack is less likely on downloads direct from the developer than through one of the download sites.

It's always best practice to download from the manufacturer or developer for many reasons of course, but if you have to go to a download site you need to be especially careful for these "PUPs"

Yeah, I definitely avoid download sites. They're not hosting it out of the goodness of their hearts & they have to make money some way. I'm not saying all download sites are bad, but for the most part, safest thing to do is go right to the source.
