As a side note, since we have been getting these updates to Windows Update, I have stopped getting Windows Update Error 8024402F, which I had been getting since I first installed Win8.1 on my new desktop. I even had to create a batch file to run almost every time I updated that reset all .dll files and restarted Windows Update. Now it works like it should.

That's all well and good but I have had three attempts to install W10 on my main Dell Vostro (one an upgrade trial and two clean attempts) and none work satisfactorily. The clean attempts wouldn't even complete installation, and the upgraded OS ran at a snails pace (think Vista x64 running on 256mb RAM, which would have been far quicker)

Now I don't mind W8.1 to W10 compatibility updates and MS using these to gather info to make the W10 experience better for all, but I do object to the fact that these 'updates' are the ones that are causing me problems and disrupting what should be a smooth ongoing W8.1 experience.

Every single problem I have encountered with W8.1 has been as a result of a botched/faulty/inapplicable update or driver update offed by MS. Every restore and problem solving scenario I have to spend time on (and that has been a lot of time) has been as a result of these problem updates.

Sorry for the rant (its not aimed at yourself ) but this is all hugely frustrating. MS are playing catchup all the time with this. This particular update must have been pulled temporarily for a reason, now its back again.

It would be nice to have an option from MS at this point to offer an update that can be used to 'opt out' of W10, at least as a temporary measure, and perhaps an update clean up tool to remove all the 8.1>10 stuff.

First of all, I don't consider that a rant, It's definitely an observation.

Second I really can't see why you are having so much problems with these update(by your system specs). Unless you have a clean install of 8.1, I'm beginning to wonder if the problem lies with some of the Dell software that comes with the PC, like that problem with some Samsung update software turning Windows Update off, but others using different PC's are having the same problem.

Thanks Cliff. Yes, I ran Shawns reg file from the Tut to disable the icon, and that was and still is fine.

Clean installing on the Dell is a mystery because on both occasions I used the ISO 'advanced drive options' to format the partition. The upgrade install was of course installing over 8.1 which was in itself a clean install from last year.

At the moment I'm sitting things out and seeing how the July 29th release pans out in the field.

I had KB3035583 pop up a few days ago even though I already had it installed (I hid it) and now KB2976978 has popped up which I already have installed - I've hidden it aswell.

But then I've seen that 'Cliff S' has installed four of KB2976978, so I'm wondering if when a duplicate pops up I should be installing them and not hiding them?

The KB number just shows for what the update is for(defender, windows update, sound driver, IE...etc.), it's not the update itself(what exactly was fixed, size etc...). There are specific updates that are major changes or cumulative, they will have their own KB number then.

It's your decision, but I install everything but drivers from Windows Update. And if you plan on upgrading to Windows 10, all updates will be installed whether you want or need them or not(except drivers I believe).

Edit; They will have been better and more thoroughly tested before they get to the normal user then, as they are now, because, they will have been tested by the millions(minions?) of people who opt to stay in the Insider Program.

I meant how Windows update will work in Windows 10, we will not be able to hide, they will be "forced" on the user of Home version(or OEM if you will) version) and Pro will be able only to temporarily defer, Enterprise can defer indefinitely.
This is no big deal for me(only for me) as I have never had problems with updates, like Mooly does, but thee updates will be much better tested before they are released in 10.

If the hidden ones you have are not drivers and you can install without any negative effects, I would recommend to go ahead and install. But if you had to hide them because they caused problems, leave them hidden.

What brings doubt to me over all this is the inconsistent behaviour of it all. If the update was required and was put on Windows Update on a given date, then why does it seemingly vanish from WU and then suddenly put in a new appearance a day or two later ?

The real answer has to be that we just don't know for sure. Another case in point is KB3035583, the 'GWX or Get Windows 10' update that puts the W10 icon on the system tray. I removed the icon via Shawns added registry key (works great) and yet KB3035583 (which is already installed) is now being offered again.

KB305035583 was revised on 7/9 and is Rev 4.

If you look at the files involved they have new dates so were revised since the last time they were installed.

After looking at them I went ahead and installed them.

Thanks Jim, that's useful to know. I'll consider installing them again perhaps, although what set me off on all this was it installing and then 15 minutes later appearing again as a 25kb update.

Na ya, that's how I learn things to(of course a system image 1st). There is one in Ten Forums trying to rip Cortana out, and just use the Rundll32 version of search(like Win7), just to see if he can do it and "exert [DEL]my[/DEL] his authority over it and make it go away."

Absolutely. I'm never more than 24 hours from a backup point, incremental (or full if its something important and I know I'll need it).

OK, bit the bullet and tried again. Both installed OK and as yet, no further prompts to install again. You see that's what is weird, a few days ago it kept reappearing after initially installing (just as I have done now), yet today it does not. If the update were identical to the one that started me off on this thread, then surely it would be behaving the same, and yet so far its not.

The way my update checks work it will be Wednesday am before I see them, its just to distressing to end the day on potential problems by forcing an update check tomorrow evening
