Solved Is anyone on here happy with windows 8?

Calico, you are correct in what you say. What I meant is that MS didn't really release the 8 Preview in order to see if it works (it does). They released it to get people used to the Metro interface and to see what features are liked and disliked. They already knew that it is going to work.

Hi,

What MS should do is give people a choice iso of forcefeeding Metro and its apps down our collective throats.

As someone else mentioned before, that start up screen is just a joke as a lot of regular apps put several links on the "regular" startmenu where they're out of sight untill you actually look them up.
On the new startscreen you just don't know where to look first when you need something as it's all smack in your face.

And yes, we know you can "organise" it but it's still not organiseable enough and why should you spend time doing that anyhow?

Ironically, the only links that actually look O.K. on the startscreen are the newly put icons. Certainly not those two dimensional cold and lifeless tiles....

I know, I know, it is getting all a bit long in the teeth....

Cheers, ;)

How about the thought that one day all windows user by millions is in one big basket as it always require us to login with "Microsoft" account to have the tiles and apps run?

Android or Desktop?

When I first opened Windows8, I thought I was having a kaleidoscopic nightmare and had switched on my Sony Experia Android iPhone with a giant screen. I almost tried to call someone already!

The Sony iPhone is half a phone and half a computer, and like most hybrids, good at neither. After all, who wants to view web pages or write a word document on a screen the size of two match boxes? Especially if you're eyesight ain't that good! And Bpay accounts when you can't print a hard copy receipt.

Now I'm being asked to perpetrate the insanity by buying a computer operating system that is half a computer and half a phone.

If I was a gambling man I'd be over the moon, because I would have just won the quinella of stupidity! :roflmao:

yeah I kind of already removed win 8 and replaced it with a ubuntu install so now im with win 7,xp and ubuntu instead. 8 just didn't make me want it enough, il'l wait for win 9 or when ever Microsoft fixes this disaster :p Not that win 8 is bad to say but I just didn't like it to much. To similar to the way win 7 works with a metro slapped on the interface and a start button ripped off its design. Although I do say there was some performance improvement and some features they changed I liked but not enough to make me want to buy win 8, they need to try harder to get me.

Kevin it’s more than that, the US government with the patriot act will have access to your data, even if the Microsoft servers is located in your country, as their law say they can go in any servers own by a US company anywhere in the world. The good news is from Europe, they refuse this idea of US government spying their citizens and corporations, they don’t want Microsoft implant the system without guaranties, and Microsoft can’t give them those guaranties.

That sounds scary. Do patriot act granting US Gov that totally wide access.? Why is it? We have our way dealing with terrorism anyway. There still should be an agreement bilaterally I think.
The funny thing is, it reminds me about the opposite thing happened here to our government (Indonesia).
Last year our government demanded RIM (Blackberry Server) to establish remote server in Indonesia with the reason it would reduce the BB user subscriptions. But RIM Canada implicitly ignore it as they found out our government was going to make their chance spying people through that server. (you know corruption here just like infection or epidemic). I don't know the update stories about it. :D

I want nothing to do with the 'cloud'. I don't trust it, and I don't trust
the American govt and 'authorities'.

Nor do I trust mine.

My OS, my progs/apps and my files will be staying on my machine.

If MS takes away that option, then it's bye-bye, MS.

Stuff the cloud.

    Borderline pathetic.
I used it very long ago for some time, but as of 2 days ago, I am learning/re-learning Linux.

the best is Pinguy, it’s a developer who just configure an Ubuntu to make it more easy to use for Windows peoples, it as all the thing install like the docky ( menu like Mac OSX ) and the gonky (info menu a right on the pic) the flash is install, email configuration with thunderbird is more easy than outlook. Their forum is great too.

Thanks for the screenshot. I was a little hesitant because Ubuntu itself seems to be alright. By the looks of it, I might like that even better.

Is there a way to convert to Pinguy from Ubuntu or should I just bite the bullet and clean install Pinguy?

Several people having a look at Linux , I see.

I just installed Mint the other day.

It is surprising how much you will have learned about windows in just a couple of years of using it.

I expect it will take at least that long to get comfortable using Linux - could be quite frustrating at first.

Hi there
Linux of almost any distro flavour is infinitely versatile and configurable -- this while a strength is also it's weakness -- in a workplace you do need consistent interfaces and standard applications -- and even the most biased Linux geek will say that the TCO in an enterprise for Linux (not as a server but for workstations) isn't significantly (if at all) cheaper than Windows.

When you can choose a load of GUI's / compile anything you like etc etc it should be possible to make a really great system -- but the average joe wants to switch straight on out of the box and start running standard applications like Office etc.

Cheers
jimbo

Yeah a little bit. Tasks we take for granted on Windows sometimes needs a phd in Linux computer science, but once you do learn something new there, it gives a small sense of satisfaction.

I was happy enough yesterday figuring out Ctrl+Alt+T = terminal open.

You make a fresh install and with Pinguy your Windows share problem will be fix, I can even go on the share of my domain without change anything in Pinguy.
