Iphone 5 - Stick to Samsung or new Nokia Windows 8 phone

I'll get the Nokia Lumia 920 on November 1st when my 2yr AT&T contract is up and I'll take my iPhone 3GS to the pistol range and put 3 .45ACP holes in it!
Please take pictures! :D

I've been doing some math and I found that if I buy an unlocked Lumia 920, I could possibly use it on a prepaid service like Virgin Mobile. Even after paying att's ETF fee, and buying a new phone at full price, and for two years on the prepaid service, I'd still be about a good thousand dollars under than two year's of ATT.

Believe you me, this is tempting.

Good idea Coke. I hope that's possible. That'd be sweet.

Virgin Mobile offers the iphone 4 and 4s for their prepaid service and my research seems to point that is a realistic possibility of doing so. The thing I lose is 4G LTE data speed for 3G speed. Apparently, using an unlocked phone with a GSM antenna will work fine.

My new-in-two is up in January. I'm actually not looking forward to shopping for a new one. In fact I'm dreading it. :(

Hippsie,

Your "new every two" doesn't tie you to a tree: you don't have to get a new phone then, that's just the point where you can get one at discount. If you like your unit, stick with it as long as you like: go month-to-month until you want another one, silly! VZW doesn't just drop support for existing phones when new ones come out. Heck, you can still ESN-swap an old 2002 RAZR into the network if you want to!

Excuse me -> silly?! Have you read the whole thread to know my situation?

#1 I picked a lemon of a model. My 4th replacement in 18 months. A Motorola Droid X2. They had screen problems from the get-go. Bad screen design. I had to set up personalization 4 Fn times! I need a new phone!

#2 The discount is only if one signs a 2-year contract, otherwise pay full price. I have my daughter's phone on my plan to consider. Want to shell out $800 or $900 for two phones for me if buying outright?

#3 Not sure if one can get extended warranty if buying outright. Probably not. I'm damn smart I did with this lemon. How about insurance? Do they sell that without a contract? Want to give a 16-year-old one without it? I also working construction?

#4 Then there's the issue of a plan bundle. What are they if going month to month? I'll research, but probably not the same.

I'll go with Coke's idea above if it works. I'll probably buy mine outright come January and see how much it'll cost me to get out of the contract so far as my daughter's phone goes which is a year later.

So there are pros and cons to contracts. I'll try my damned best to obtain Coke's idea.

So, just finished reading ios 6's new features. As a Windows Phone 7 user, the features are so scoffable, my throat is clear of phlegm they're that scoffable! The literal summation of ios 6 is literally an new adventures app that offers turn by turn navigation. Windows Phone has that, but doesn't have 3D maps. Apparently ios uses your Facebook contacts for your contacts list, Windows Phone had that and more. A new feature I thought was already standard in ALL platforms was texting someone whose call you missed. Windows Phone already had that. Not only that, if you have a missed call and they're a social network contact, you can email them, write on their Facebook wall, with WP8 you can Skype them, or I believe send a twitter message on top of texting that person back. Siri opens apps, Windows Phone has before Siri was precooked into ios. It has a panorama app built in, Nokia Lumia phones can get that and will get that in the 7.8 update. A menial email feature that I guess wasn't in the email app was attaching an item to the email without having to find it first, then compose an email. There is also a Share feature throughout the platform to share to Facebook or twitter, SCOFF! Windows Phone has innate sharing features built into basically EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of the software. Not only does it share to Facebook or twitter, you can easily share through email or text or SkyDrive or google+ or whatever social network you're on and can do them all at once if you want. There really is little need for a third party Facebook app for Windows Phone and such. 4G LTE? My Nokia Lumia 900 already had it.

Essentially, it's a rip of the features that makes Windows Phone a Windows Phone. Blaspehmous curds!

Hippsie, I've been looking around and Virgin Mobile is the best bet here. 35 dollars a month for 300 minutes of talk time and unlimited text and 3G data. It appears that an unlocked GSM phone WILL in fact work as long as you can get the microSIM card. That is the difficulty here as the only ones I can find are Canadian or British. I'll need to find out a bit more though. The Nokia Lumia 920 i read today is on pre-order I believe in China for 510 US dollars, but might be around 700 for an unlocked no-contract version of it.

I hate to have to through gobs of cash for a new phone as I already have a decent phone, but long term, I still end up saving money and hassle.

So, by scoffable you mean that the features are worthless and unnecessary? If that is the case, why would these other phones have them?

I think you are saying, once again, that the feature set of the new iPhone isn't bringing anything revolutionary to the iPhone platform. However, since it is a better iPhone than there has ever been, and zillions of people adore their iPhones, the new iPhone5 will be considered by them to be a great phone.

Yeah, I'm basically saying the new feature set isn't new or revolutionarily different as Windows Phone already has them. I believe that feature set of social networking should already be built into phones, as that is what I mean that Windows Phone puts people first, not apps. Shoot, this morning, I unlocked my phone and saw right away my brother in a kilt just by glancing at my Start Screen! Didn't need to open an app. I don't believe smartphones should be a wasteland of apps just for social networking, as the phone form factor implies people connectivity with different modes of communication, a smartphone these days should already have social networking baked in, not with an app, just intrinsically there like calling or texting is.

Shoot, I just realized Virgin Mobile is a CDMA network and therefore real difficult to get different phones working on it. Re-researching this leads me to T-Mobile's prepaid service as they're a GSM provider, so yes, an unlocked GSM Nokia Lumia 920 WILL in fact work. Best part of it is that they have a $30 monthly plan with I believe 150 minutes of talk and unlimited text and data with top-off cards available.

Thanks, Coke. Now that's way cooool! I have a nephew that works for at&t outa Twin Cities. I'll pick his brain on this also. I know the next generation will be run on super WiFi, so even Virgin may change over some day.

That would be a good idea, especially since att has a prepaid service too, but it doesn't seem hugely cost effective, but that depends on your usage.

Excuse me -> silly?! Have you read the whole thread to know my situation?

Hey bud,

No offense intended. I guess I did miss something. Maybe I was reading too many threads. What I came away with was "damn, I'm coming up on end-of-contract and I have to get another phone [because of that]". If you're dealing with a lemon I understand. Sorry 'bout that!

My apology for coming on so strong. I was having a bad hair day and this subject ticks me off because of the lemon. I guess I shouldn't take it so serious. Not exactly the worse thing in life. I'll eventually get passed the problem. :)
