A $50 Celeron G540 would be twice as fast as that old box.

Here:

- Celeron G540 - $45
- B75 board - $70 (with USB 3 and SATA 3)
- 8GB RAM - $40
- Corsair CX 430 v2 - $20 or so after rebates
- Samsung 128GB SSD - $100
- Hdd for bulk storage - your choice.
- Pick a decent $50 case
- Any $20 burner
- Win 8 - $15

Voila! Problem solved - welcome to 2012.

Well, my GeForce 5700 @256MB works like a charm (???!) with Win 8 on a 2.8Ghz P4, so it isn't that....

Why bother? Look at the build I posted. Smashed any old system and its dirt cheap and good quality.

I'm having so many issues with it now, may be time to enter the new age and get a good laptop. I still find it puzzling why it won't boot from DVD,CD or USB. Also I couldnt go into safe mode today either. I had no trouble doing so yesterday. Are the safe mode settings in the BIOS. I did return all those to default. If that's a problem, my bad.

Ivy, there are some of us out here who try to force new OSes onto
old equipment for fun, and to push the limits of its capabilities.

We don't do it as an exercise in frustration (tho it often is) or because
it's 'productive' (it often isn't) but because we enjoy doing it.

And that then enables us to assist those still using the older
machines, as we are attempting to do here.

I have a very good i7 here, but did that stop me from trying
to push Win 8 onto my Pentium 3?

No. (And no, it didn't work, no decent graphics card options).

@ headoperator....

If you have set your BIOS to its defaults, it won't boot from CD, DVD or USB.

You need to go into the BIOS and change the boot order so it will boot from CD/DVD first.

Changed it in bios, still did not work got error message "device not available". I also have the option at startup to press F12 for boot menu from there I can choose which drive to boot from. I don't know if thats the same as changing it in Bios?

Ah, yes, it is, but it doesn't change the setting permanently, just for that boot instance.

Worth a go......

I tried booting while in windows. Keep getting message "setup failed to intialized". I have a feeling somethings blocking me from installing this.

@Kat - Thank You! You understand the challenge of getting fresh software to run track on antique hardware. I'm currently running an Evaluation Copy of Win8 CP Build 8250 on a Dell OptiPlex GX 260 from 2003. You can't stretch the limitations any further than mine and I wanna provide positive reinforcement that his application will pony up and install. I'd like to know what kinda CPU he's running because there are heavy duty compatibility issues with some chips that won't run Win8 whatsoever. My guess is that his chip is okay and, with patience, that bad boy will load and run. My name's John and I'll be standing by.

NVIDIA GEForce 7300SE/7200GS

I tried to take back Windows 8 pro to Frys, with no luck. Shoulda known. They said I need to contact Microsoft to discuss the issue. They suggested downloading Windows 8 ISO from Microsoft since I have a purchased key, but no one there knew how to so that. i will try and contact M$ tomorrow.

Did you see my $350 build earlier? There is no point bothering with an 8yr old system.

Windows 8 VM is install on his own SSD.
Acer SA10 Pentium 4 @ 2.8 Ghz.
SiS 661FX chipset.
1 GB RAM.
320 GB hard disk.
GeForce 5700 graphics card @ 256 MB.
SB Live! sound-card.
17" LCD monitor.

Runs Win 8 CP (32-bit) like a dream.

Total Cost- $0.00 as I already owned it.

And, by swapping hard disks, it will (and does)
run everything from DOS 6/Win 3.1 to Win 8.

And it also runs my printers and scanner.

So, why not keep using it?
