Solved IDT hd audio not working

Interesting; I dual-booted win 7 with 8 (on my HP 620 notebook) and found some surprises:
1. With win7, EVERYTHING WORKS perfectly (both in x32 & x64); no issues whatsoever.
2. With win8 x32 running on the second partition everything works fine ... audio, video etc. (Only the x32 limitation on RAM -- 2.90 GB usable no matter your RAM size).
3. with win 8 x64, the story is different --- no sound, video playing in slow-motion, cpu using more battery power.

Well, I can manage x32 (of win 8).

Just wanted to share my adventures.

Hello,
I've tried now every suggested solution in this thread without success.... Thanks Ojeg for sharing your experiance! I bought Win8 pro 64bit (download special offer). Is it possible to change to 32bit? It this part of my download and can I "downgrade"? In order to get a well running system back, I would accept to run the 32 bit version.

Regards

Sorry for you guys.

The success story I had here refers to a HP laptop dv7-3100 series, Win8 x64 os.
The IDT chipset there seems to be supported on MS catalog site.

This technique doesn't work on a newer one I have BUT luckily HP provides Win8 x64 drivers.

Another IDT (3rd one) is the oldest one and has only XP drivers, difficult to get going with some prerelease Vista drivers. Here is a 32bit os I'm talking about.

With IDT drivers is better to look specifically on your manufacturer's site, provided for the model you got.
If only Win7 drivers are available, try to run the installer anyway and see if it works.

This is for HP computers:
Example of driver that matches hp-dv7-3100 IDT audio:
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Driver HP Pavilion dv7-3100eb Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support

Info regarding an upgrade to Windows8 from preinstalled Win7:
Upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 HP Pavilion dv7-3100eb Entertainment Notebook PC | HP® Support

Some models don't have Win8 drivers.

Those who wanna go to 32bit: good luck, there is no downgrade option. Unfortunately that involves a disk format and all your important files need to be backup-ed first.
I'll still try looking for other 64bit IDT driver until I find a match before taking that capital decision.

So far, no drivers made me change my mind.

Thanks for sharing.
The driver you got working there on Win7 x64 should be the best match for Win8 x64 as well.
You just need to try that exact driver package/installer on Win8 x64.

I'm glad the 32bit works for you.:)
In my opinion it's related to better matching drivers.

There are always risks when we upgrade older laptop models.

I don't know the exact details for you hardware but the official site:
HP 620 Notebook PC*-* Download drivers and software - specify product name - HP Business Support Center

does not provide Win8 drivers. You can try the Win7 x64 installer in "compatibility mode for Win7" and then run it.

Otherwise I'm out of options for this. regarding the 32bit switch, I don't know about the special offer conditions but you will need to reinstall the 32bit version from scratch if your current os is 64bit.

Hello,
Thanks Ojeg! The solution was to switch to Win8 32bit. All sound works fine with 32bit. How to get it? You need to install a Win7 32bit version on your Notebook (just download one from the net), because the Win8 installer discover the version you had before and then installs the same bit version. After I had installed the 32bit version I could use the link from my Win8 invoice and the installed set-up Win832bit automatically. Now everything works fine, just the disadvantage of the 32bit systems...

Hi, I have the same problem.
I don't have sound for days now and I don't want to go back to Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit or Windows 8 Pro 32bit.
I want to find solution on Windows 8 Pro 64bit.
Solution is not to have Windows 8 pro 64 bit and go to Windows 8 32bit.
Cause I use programs on 64bit and I don't want to go on 32bit again.

I agree, switching to 32bit JUST for sound is not a good idea at all... you'll have to fight your way through, be it on 64bit, because drivers are available if you know how to (manually) install them after finding the good links.

We all have issues with the IDT drivers. :D

Welcome to the forums!

If you tried the first steps (worked for my chipset, didn't worked for others) you' have an idea about the details of your specific driver. So you'll have to see something like this but replace the realtek one from example:

driver.png

The subsys with number is what you need to search for on the ms update catalog seen on first posts.
Otherwise try to look for that on google as well.
It will provide some details about the driver and chipset and since there are many different ones, some have drivers and others not or are harder to find. Mostly the Win7 drivers should work fine if nothing else is found BUT the installer will prevent you from installing (bad OS) and you'll then need to try and extract the installer with 7-Zip and run the install through device manager manually.
Not all drivers work and not all users succeed in completing this step.

Is this issue on your alienware from specs or not?
Because the alienware has Win8 drivers and creative (good one) audio:
Drivers & Downloads | Dell United States (select Win8 x64 from the drop-down list)

Good luck

Got is Working on a HP 8440p

Hi: I have had similar problems on an HP 8440p, where I could not get audio out of the display port connect. Work ok on Win7 pro but no luck with Win8 pro. I tried different drivers .... reinstalling but still lo luck

BUT I got it WORKING and here is how:D

1) fresh install of Win7 pro - 64bit
2) installed drivers from the HP driver disk
3) installed HP Support Assistance from their web site
4) execute HP support assistance to get the drivers current
5) went to the Intel site. Ran their driver update tool.. It upgraded the Video, Wireless and Network Driver
6) did an Upgrade to Win 8 pro, keeping the apps.... NOT a Fresh install.

AND my audio works and its still the same version.

I know this is an ugly process, but maybe their is a clue to simplify the process. Is the audio dependent on another driver.... the Chipset? I don't know.

This is a nice procedure that should keep all useful and compatible drivers in the process. It should help some people resolving the issue.

I have similar problem on a HP i7-3820 desktop running Win 8 and an IDT HD audio codec. On my system 2 apps the sound goes in and out. It will be out for days and then all of a sudden back. All other apps the sound is alwyas good and of course the system sound is always good. Has anyone experienced this?? Thx in advance for any response!!

Welcome to the forums by the way.

Usually getting newer drivers is the best we can do, and this has to fix it most of the time.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes I had downloaded new drivers before this when I first got the system two months ago but didn't expect a new driver for this issue so soon after that one. Guess they have been having their hands full with the new Win 8 rollout. Should have expected it being up front and relatively beta!!!
