control panel > recovery > create a recovery drive
you'll need a 16GB usb
Right Charm -> Change PC Settings -> Update and Recovery -> Recovery -> Advanced Startup ->
Restart Now -> Troubleshoot -> Advanced Options -> Command Prompt
dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:"H:\RecoveryImage\Install.wim" /Index:1 /ApplyDir:C:\
that command will apply the recovery image install.wim to the windows partition..
Verify H is the recoveryimage partition and C is your windows partition
ONCE you enter DOS the drive letters tend to change, other then what was assigned in windows - and I was trying to avoid this part
if you want to fix the disk - you need to backup D and E to an external source ( you have 250GB of data one those to drives) and create a recovery drive(USB)
if you just want to restore your factory windows 8 we go the way of DOS and no media needed
Actually you are better off with the fresh install of windows 8.1 and getting The right Asus programs
If you go here, ASUS Service | North America and type in N550JV, and then click Search. You should see N550JV listed. Click it and select Windows 8 64 bit for OS. Then go to Utilities. If you scroll down you should see "ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities". Windows 8.1 has likely installed a basic ATK utility. Something else I saw in the list that you may want to download is the ASUS InstantKey Utility. That may be the one your looking for to give you the onscreen key press popups. That last one is not listed for my laptop model. If you have already done this my apologies. Some people will just Google for something and download the first one they find. Depending on what your looking for you may not get you the one for your specific hardware. I just want to make sure you get the correct version. I tried to post a link to the exact spot the download is but it just always links to the main page I posted above. The URL doesn't change as you navigate to the download. It looks like they don't want anybody linking directly to the downloads.
