How to close a window and return to desktop?

I am not sure which post you are referring to, XweApopnX, but you most certainly can close an app! Read the posts! A single swipe from the top and it is gone. - Or did I misunderstand your post?

Ah- I see, I hadn't tried that. Yah, Boom, it's closed down.

But it leaves you still, in Metro. I don't think the mechanism exists for it to dump you into the Desktop after closing it.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I boot up a Start Orb system in anticipation to open a program. I tap the orb (or WinKey) to open the menu. I then proceed to scroll down either with the mouse pointer or arrows keys to open it. I use the program and close it out. Where's that darn Start Menu? It's closed only to start the process over.

I think it rather handy that the Start Screen in 8 appears in anticipation that I might desire to open another program or app. And while I'm there I think it to be handy that I get to see at-a-quick-glance personal information that I've personally arranged to my liking such as the amount of emails & from whom, scrolling pics of people I care & think about, news/sports headlines, weather, time, and the like via tiles and/or live tiles that automatically update periodically.

A far better system IMO. It takes me far more time to boot up and see all that info on my 7 side, for either I have to open an email program, a browser with a news site (or multiple ), a picture program, or have them configured to start at boot which I still wait. Or I have gadgets to do some, which delays boot.

Windows 8, boom! Windows 7, chugga chug. Might as well watch paint dry. :p

It works if you swipe all the way down, then in the same motion swipe up and to the left side of the screen. That'll close the metro app and bring you the next most recent app.

You're welcome.
Don't know what happened to riotgrrrl that started the thread.
Windows 8.1 solves her question.

Now, we can choose to go directly to the desktop
when closing a metro app with Alt -F4 or mouse handgrab / swipe close.

Or switch and replace using a new feature of the edge UI (right clicking an edge thumbnail)

From Taskbar and Navigation Properties

riotgrrrl probably bought a Mac instead!
I can't change the start screen to desktop as the navigation tab doesn't appear in properties. Can I access that setting elsewhere?
Thanks

Yeah, thats another thing: I'm up to date with all the W8 updates but the 8.1 upgrade doesn't appear in the App Store.

If you're finished with a Metro app and you want to return to the Desktop, just press Win + D and you're there. The app doesn't need to be "closed" at all.

Manually installed the updated so I was able to upgrade to 8.1 and set the boot to desktop as the navigation tab now appears.

What about RAM? Don't we want to release it by closing apps? If not by closing, then how?
