How can I enable stealth mode on my netgear router?

It's solved but I'm wondering about something, I have DSL at the house I'm at right now, and I'm connected through WIFI on a netgear router, but the router is bridged with a 2wire modem, which one will have the firewall and be blocking packets?

The gateway router that is providing DHCP is the one with the firewall and ports.

Does that make a difference if I got a static ip address and I also noticed the internet connection is set to PPPoE instead of DHCP

Yes the PPPoE is because it's a dial up connection. To avoid problems with DHCP just be sure and turn off DHCP on the Netgear router as I believe the 2 wire is the gateway modem/router.

Yes but check the model of the 2 wire first to make sure it's a modem/router, they make both versions I believe.

It is a AT&T 2701HG-B 2Wire Wireless Gateway DSL Router Modem, but I use the router for wireless connection since the speeds are much faster.

Well the Netgear is now an access point so doesn't require DHCP to be turned on because the 2 wire already has a DHCP server.

If you leave DHCP turned on for both you could run into problems.

The 2 wire is the gateway the way you have it now, so it's guarding the network with it's firewall/ports.

The Netgear router is just an access point in this arrangement.

If you wanted to use the Netgear for the gateway you would need to obtain a regular modem and not a combo unit which is more ideal in my opinion.

So even if I got the wireless disabled on the 2wire it isn't possible to make the netgear the gateway?

Actually I believe with this modem/router that using bridged mode bypasses the gateway function, although I haven't messed with a bridged modem/gateway but I believe that is how it works. You can probably read about this function on the 2 wire page.

It's rare for these units to have a bridge mode but I believe that is what it's for. So in bridged mode you would leave DHCP on for the Netgear router because bridged should be bypassing the 2 wire gateway.
