I found the culprit. AMD's Catalyst Multi Desktop option, which although I had selected I did not need or use. I unselected it and my system keeps my desktop background. Oh the troubles of one little misplaced check mark. I discovered the problem when I started a new user and started adding programs and settings, starting with AMD's Catalyst which includes the Eyefinity program that manages my three screen array so that it works as one large image. I also like the Hyrda-grid which allows me to use just one of the screens if I want instead of spreading the application across all three which with a 55" wide display is just too wide for many applications but grand for other apps.
