My mother is running Windows 8.1 on her new ASUS laptop. She's retired and it's common for her to get up periodically to check on something in the kitchen. When she comes back to the computer, it prompts her for the password so that she can verify her identity. She struggles with typing the password due to her lack of keyboarding knowledge and the mixed-case nature of the password and I could help with that by changing the password but I'm trying to understand why she is being prompted for the password in the first place.
I assumed that the screen saver was kicking in and forcing her to login in again after an absence of a few minutes but when I checked her screen saver settings, I found that she doesn't have one; the timeout interval is greyed out and the checkbox that asks for the login screen to be shown after that interval is unchecked so the screensaver is clearly not the culprit.
What else would cause Windows to prompt her for the password (other than a reboot)? I'd like to stop Windows from prompting her for her password or, if that is not possible, would like to extend the timeout interval from whatever it is now - two or three minutes maybe? - to something like 15 or 30 minutes.

- I *think* many of the questions to which I've answered "not sure" are irrelevant because it is a laptop but if you need to know specifically what model of cooling fans or keyboard or whatever where built in to the laptop, I can try to find that out if you tell me where to look. I don't see this information in the Windows/System display but maybe it is elsewhere. I'm not sure what a "PSU" is: Powe
