Forbes Win 8 is the first Windows I hate

My only hope for Windows 8 now is that MS comes to its senses and allows us to customize Windows 8 to focus more on the keyboard and mouse. It could achieve this with the service pack 1 update that we expect—if Microsoft holds to historical timetables—to land towards the end of this year. I’m not asking Microsoft to abandon touch, just give people who have no need for it—who, by my estimation account for 99 percent of Windows users—the chance to move it into the background.

Why Windows 8 Is The First Windows Release I Absolutely Hate - Forbes

People paid money for Windows 8 that forced the MPI upon them, which they don't use.

We can, of course, disect every negative report about Windows 8 and we will always find something that is flawed. Fact though is, from all the reports that float around on the web, that the vast majority of desktop users is unhappy with the touch UI on the desktop.

If MS does not react and correct the situation, there will be a big negative impact on their business and on the PC industry as a whole. It does not help if a few geeks like us can deal with the situation. The vast majority of the users are not that flexible and will look for other solutions. As long as Windows 7 is still around, that is relatively easy. But as time goes by, the situation would seriously erode if MS does not react properly and listens to it's customers. Working against the wishes of your customers has never worked.

A few of them are not able to grasp a very large number do not like it, and that it is having a bad effect on sales.

Nothing will make any difference to those few.

I get it! You don't like it! ok.
...a very large number do not like it...
yes... indeed, but I think a very large number really do not know what they are doing. If someone asks, "where's the control panel", "how do I turn off my computer" ... how can one respond... It's too complicated?

Moving your pointing device up a narrow 2 or 3 inch square and then, oops, I missed, now I have to start at the orb again and go find that darn nest! Or, which of the 30 icons on my desktop do I click? How about 75 cascaded rows on a taskbar tool bar menu! Very neat and useful but you had better not misdirect your pointer.

It's ok to not like it, even hate it, ... whatever floats your boat.
Microsoft will adapt to customers. They are a survivor.

But before Windows 3.1 there was DOS Shell, which was a full-screen task-switching environment that didn't multi-task properly. Just like Metro, in fact.

Yeah but you don't have to stay in Metro if you don't want, you can just go to the desktop like I do. Using the Winkey to go back and forth is really quick.

There is a HUGE difference between dosshell in terms of code design, memory limitations and application development. Metro apps are being developed that have full multi tasking copy - paste - send to - photo editing - spreadsheet calculations - etc... features. WinRT is in its infancy.

Well I think Alt-Tab probably first showed up on DOS Shell and is still there in Windows 8. But you still can't see two screens at once.

Although it's easy to avoid Metro now, MS seems to want people to write Metro apps rather than Desktop software- in which case it would become harder to avoid.

All those here who purport to know everything about Windows 8, how about you get it right?

I certainly do not know everything about 8 except that it is easy to use. If one has a 3rd party start menu metro blocker, the OS is partially disabled... I tried start8, it was horrible! It disrupts IMO, how 8 is supposed to function and adds effort to the process.

This is how confusing it seems to be: Clearing Up The Confusion: It’s “The New Windows 8 UI” – Not “Metro UI” | TechCrunch. All those here who purport to know everything about Windows 8, how about you get it right?

Semantics

No. Lack of clarity.

Well, it would have been Metro, but that German company put a kibosh to that. Modern still describes it none the less.

Old article, but I haven't seen any updates: Microsoft finally comes clean(er) on post-Metro naming plans | ZDNet

You know part of the reason why Microsoft isn't too prevalent in the tablet space? Or why they're regarded in many articles as to "what will fix Microsoft?" Because they didn't want to upset their core user base with a change over like this. They FINALLY did, and they're FINALLY getting traction in the touch and tablet PC computing space. The larger chunk of new Windows PCs have been touch equipped, for obvious reasons. This is where the Blue wave for Windows expands upon, not the elder traditional UI for the technological rodent, but for the modern touch. If you don't like Windows 8 or don't care for touch, just use Windows 7 and/or get over Windows 8. Simply put. Don't be whining about a "missing" feature set in a new Windows version that Microsoft repeatedly has said over and over and over and over again, for NEW PCs.

But this article is just more typical moot.

I agree, it is for tablets and phones. That's fine.

Are MS not going to bother with their gigantic existing user base?

We haven't seen the final article yet , so we don't know for certain what they will do.

and they're FINALLY getting traction in the touch and tablet PC computing space.

Are they?
