EPS format pretty much is on its way out. Its use these days is for mainly print media like newspaper and mags.
Its ability to hold 4 layers CMYK (Blue red yellow Black) in one file was its main stay. these layers could easily be converted to tiff format for computer to plate printers. Quark was the most used program for newspapers which Iused eps pics and stories to build pages.
These days most have upgraded to InDesign which is more versatile and while it can still use eps, adobe pdfs, and cloud based page building, are becoming the norm. I still use eps for backup when I get a slightly corrupted pdf.
