If I go into Safe Mode in Windows 8.1 64bit, I'm greeted by explorer.exe constantly looping and crashing around once per second, with a message saying that "the instruction at 0x8000eef7 referenced memory at 0x00000018. The memory could not be read."
I don't need to go into safe mode right now, so it's not an immediate problem, but should I need to do so it would be unusable.
Anyway, I've tried:
I guess the alternative would be to replace explorer with explorer++, which hopefully wouldn't suffer the same problem; I think that would allow me to dispense with explorer entirely?
Any thoughts?

Anyway, I've tried:
- reinstalling windows
- running a full anti-virus scan (no problems)
- running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (no problems)
- running sfc (no problems)
- uninstalling Start8, on a hunch that it might be responsible (it wasn't)
- running y-cruncher to check stability (30 passes without problems)
- running memtest86 (12 passes without problems)
- running memtest86+ (4 passes without problems)
