Do we need another Windows OS?

Microsoft made a case this week for Windows RT, its stripped down version of Windows 8. But do we need a third version of Windows?

It's been about five months now since Windows RT debuted. And this week Microsoft made a case to CNET for the new operating system.

Michael Angiulo, corporate vice president, Windows Planning, Hardware & PC Ecosystem, told CNET: "It was a ton of work for us and we didn't do the work and endure the disruption for any reason other than the fact that there's a strategy there that just gets stronger over time."

And he went on to spell out reasons why RT is necessary.

We don't need a new OS but I can understand the need to technicaly unify the coding platfroms through various processor architectures hence the need for WinRT on tower PCs. The need to have a same app, a same app version, working and being installed on the whole range of devices from the smallest to the largest.
What we DO NOT need is to change the way we interract with the computer because that's already at the optimum (Microsoft fails to understand that). There is nothing easier or faster than resizeable windows, jointly with a task bar and windows captions. Instant drag&drop, copy-paste, dialogs, moving files from one folder to another etc are of course irreplacable.
Forget about touch screen replacing keyboards and mice. A touch screen is cool when you are on the bus or at a diner and you can't deploy all these gears without being ridiculous, but in all other circumstances the keyboard and the mouse are far more faster, accurate and reliable. We don't need to handicap ourself just for the sake of looking modern.

I wasn't trying to bag you, it's just that I think your posts sometimes lose their impact because they can be intensive reading. While some here clearly read it all, I do wonder how many of the silent majority don't.

I'm just saying this because I come from a background where I've had to do a lot of high-level writing, often on very technical issues aimed at non-technically minded recipients. Maintaining people's attention is vital, or you'll never get your message across.

Hi there
@Ray8
I'm looking forward with some English friends at "Bagging" a few Aussies at the next "Ashes Test matches". Strange though it is I actually quite Enjoy the Cricket matches -- especially Test matches vs "Down under".

Loved it when some US guys were watching a recent series England Vs India in a Bar in Central Brussels -- I'll never forget the remark one US guy made -- "OK you've now played the TEST match --when do you start the REAL game".

Have a good Easter Hols.

The Oz cricketers should hand in their bat, ball and gloves now and go learn to play cricket. Not that I really care for cricket, it's like watching grass grow, but watching grass grow is more exciting.

I can't install VMware Workstation as my bundle is too old (v7.1.2). :(

Get a newer bundle to apply the needed kernel patches, 7.1.5 or 7.1.6 and you can use your own legit key with those.

Yeah I figured out that I need to get a newer bundle, when I tried to use the patch. :)

I might do it this weekend (I've got VMware Player 5 installed so it's not critical).

OK. You have a lot of insight and knowledge to convey, but your posts are usually very, very, long. That detracts from the message that you're trying to convey, because it simply gets lost in the verbiage. Some may have the patience to read and attempt to understand every sentence, but I suspect that most will not.

You really need to take note of the theme in the link. Can I convey my message in less words?

Hi there
That's me -- I'm not part of the "Twitter" generation where I have to convey everything in 140 characters or less or even worse - the Facebook stuff.
The whole point surely of The WRITTEN word is that it can be perused leisurely and re-read multiple times.
If people don't want to read that's their choice.

Actually I wonder if one could learn even something basic like simple arithmetic if they were restricted to "Twitter" like responses only.

Sometimes the enjoyment of a load of people's posts and threads is not purely just on the content - but the writing style / content / wit (or lack of it) and all sorts of intangibles.

Writing everything in a Machine like and boring way just IMO loses half the fun and spontaneity of the Forum.

Cheers
jimbo

As far as I can tell jimbo, you always do a fine job of conveying your messages. Most of the time I don't fully understand what everyone is writing about. Yours are always easy for someone to get the gist of. You are one of the few who are easy to learn from.

You have good punctuation & leave extra space when changing topics.

You use words & terms that everyone uses or is easily found on google.
Mobile Photo Interface always comes to mind for me whenever I head for google. typing 'MPI' into google still doesn't work.
I still have to tell google where to find it. 'eightforums MPI'

Ummmm...... you can basically interact with Windows on the Desktop in the same fashion as a mouse. It's the modern aspect of Windows 8 that is differently interacted with touch.

Hi everyone
Thanks for those comments

Off for Easter Hols now -- Good Friday in my experience is the WORST day even to THINK of travelling on so I'm off today.

Happy Easter everyone -- and someone please find a Genuine x-64 build of Windows blue -- I like messing around with the current "Leak" in a VM but as it's a 32 bit build it isn't going to be installed on a Real laptop -- all mine have 8GB RAM in them so a 32 bit OS is just a waste. I might "pinch my Mums old XP one" and test it there. I'll say "The dog messed it up".

Cheers

Yes of course. My point was that touch screen is great, if not unavoidable, in any situation when you don't have the possibility to lay a mouse carpet. It's great technology. But whenever you can get a mouse, the mouse is better.
Same with keyboards: physical keys and buttons are always easier to press than those drawn on a touchscreen. I would not say "I hate" touch screen, no, but I always found them less reliable than real buttons. JMO.
