Heh it would have to be improved to the level of being a desktop again, I need like 8 programs snapped at least before I'll consider it a productive environment :)

This will only be true if Software Vendors develop only as Tile UI apps, which may be detrimental to them.
Or
MS does away with the Desktop completely.

If Desktop goes away completely and it is no longer productive, or Vendors can create productive apps for the new UI
Watch for Software Vendors to move exclusively to Linux, maybe?
Free OS, but the problem with Linux is too many Flavors. Devs will have to agree to pick one and develop for it only and if others want to work around other flavors, that's on them, (ie Ubuntu or Fedor, Redhat, whatever).

This is going to be an interesting time over the next couple of years to see what direction things will go.
Who knows, maybe Linux will get a boost with major developers?

With some difficulty.

I have been building this stuff or a while - you learn as you go along.

It takes a lot of work. It is great way of understanding how the o/s is put together and how it works.

There are a few of us around the world who do this kind of thing - most get explorer going - sometimes I have to help others, e.g. to get sound going - sometimes I get hints form the other guys/gals.

Each new o/s brings new challenges. This one more than most.

I am not bothering with the metro stuff in there - waste of space.

I have left the SRT gui as is - can flip back and forth between that and desktop.

SRT is a bit pointless if you have access to bootable desktop with the repair programs you need - much better than what SRT offers.

Because MS have butchered explorer.exe in win8 (to make it difficult to use on it's own ), my explorer.exe is a little different.

Any tips/links?

Sorry, there aren't.

I built this by hand.

Looking round - it seems I am way ahead of the other guys.

It seems they don't like 8 very much and they haven't bothered trying to make a decent pe4 yet.

It is working well - apart from a strange issue with msi installer not working.

W8 has multiple monitor support, of which you can show the desktop on one, Metro UI on another. If I remember correctly, it has the native ability to support 4 monitors.

Stardock's "Start8" works very well, but is a 30-day trial. Its $5 if you are all for the 7 start button. I can ajust to Metro but the new themes, (being only 2 default and limited dark colors) makes it tougher not to use something as WindowsBlinds.

Microsoft has become Apple.

That's exactly what Steve Ballmer wanted (and has stated publicly) so congrats to him I guess... Though I guess he doesn't realise that the 600+ million windows users would already be Apple users if we they thought that was a better way to go...

Hi There!

Is it possible to disable Metro or at least get back the Windows 7 Start Menu (with Search)?

I am happy for third party applications paid and free to be recommended?

Cheers

Well nice to see you on Eight Forums, again!

Start8 ($$$):
Start8 for Windows® 8 - Bringing back the Windows Start menu

Stardock's option of Start8 is very, very promising while I'll be a customer of my second stardock product. (WindowsBlinds)

ClassicShell (Free):
Welcome to Classic Shell

ClassicShell has a nice selection opposed to other Start Button replacement's. While it is ugly at first sight, Classic Shell can be skinned.

Vistart (Free):

ViStart is skinnible too, but has less functionality (in my opinion, find out for your needs!) but it looks very nice.

Hope this helps!

Right now, I am advising people to use Classic Shell, much more customizable then the others over all.
Heck, I might have used it in Win7 had I found it sooner.

If I get back into PE stuff it will be my Start Shell of choice.

Here is my Config file for Classic Shell if anyone is interested.
I'ld also like to know if it works for others.

This is based on the Smoked Glass Skin that I do think comes with Classic Shell
Just unzil the file, (XML Settings file) and the go into Classic Shell Setting, Click on Backup and click Load from XML File
find that file and load it.
then see if you like it.

It's a minimalist Start menu.
