just wondering if this trick could be used for starting the desktop application immediately after boot.

Yes I found something:

Do the same procedure as in MichaelHein's first post but with this code:

But this time a consistent name:

1. Save the file using notepad called something like: ShowDesktop.js

It works on the Desktop. I still need to test this more and I doubt it will be faster than the "original show desktop in the startup folder" technique.

The easiest way to shutdown your PC is to press the power button, just like on a phone or tablet. simple, one press, boom.. it's done.

The only argument people have against this is some people say they can't easily access their power button, to which my reply is.. then how do you turn it back on?

Mine turns on by itself every morning at 7 AM via a BIOS setting. My coffee machine starts automatically at 6:50 AM.

What is the big deal about shutting down or restarting your computer? When was the last time you restarted your phone "just because"? If the system is stable, then there is no need. IPads do not need shutting down. They go to sleep.

I have two iPads and an iPhone. My wife has an iPhone and my kids each have iPods. I can tell you that eventually all of them need to be rebooted. My iPad will stop syncing email until I reboot. My son uses his iPod in a dock as an alarm clock and once a week or so he has to reboot it or else the alarm app quits working.

My point is that all operating systems, no matter how well written, will eventually fragment memory and could benefit from a reboot.

I like the discussion here to present options. My Windows 8 computer is a tablet with no keyboard, so having a one tap shortcut is better than swiping from the right, tapping Power, and then selecting shutdown or restart. I'll take one tap over a swipe and two taps anyday.

For real there are people who don't reboot? Cheers to our good UPS systems, batteries and power plants!
Quite amusing.

Note that viruses that are loaded into RAM and all running possible bugs and errors will be kept or evolve over time without a reboot.

So this explains that even for us humans, sleep mode which is our best option, is in some cases not enough. Reboot doesn't exist in this case and some glitches can appear overtime...

I Agree. What's wrong with a reboot? I do it daily. Isn't a fast boot something that you expect newer hardware to accomplish? But if you reboot once a month then even a 10 minutes boot time is a reasonable speed. Or you don't reboot because you really forgot where the button is (possible but what are the odds for this...).
Without electric power all goes down eventually.

I agree. God should have given us humans a reboot option, not only sleep mode.
