Chkdsk?

Thanks for your reply, upon starting into windows 8 now, it doesn't come up with any checking anymore, just goes into windows 8 smoothly. If I try to start into Vista, nothing, nothing at all. And yes, it's detecting the drive as ntfs with o capacity. I will try HD Tune tonight when I have some time to play around and see what happens. Just all seems so strange that just a few days after I install windows 8, the vista drive fails....strange coincidence?
I'll also post my question again as well...does anyone know how to restore from a back up done with whatever back up program that comes with vista? At this point I'm gonna try to hold on til Black Friday and hope that Dell has a good sale so I can pick up another computer for cheap. Trying to decide if I want windows 8 on that or buy a 7 cheaper. I've been told that if I buy a windows 8 computer I can't put in my other internal hard drive in it because they are all different now than there were before (mine connects with the wide ribbon).
If you have backed up your Vista, you can restore Vista with the method in this Tutorial:Restore Complete Computer - Vista Forums

Thanks, looks like it says it is for vista pro, ultimate or business, I just had the regular vista so unfortunately I don't think this will work for me....

nope, it's completely "dead"...will only go to the safe mode screen and when I press safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt or start normally all each go to a blank black screen.

Sorry to hear that. I think turning off fast boot fixed the original chkdsk problem. I think taking possession of the 7 drive to view messed up 7. I don't think the drive failed. Can you undo that? There are Brink tutorials on the subject. I'd look but I'm on my phone.

Not sure how to undo it and honestly I'm starting to feel overwhelmed about the whole thing, I couldn't get into it even by safe mode before I changed permissions. I'm going to try the hard drive check later or tomorrow that was suggested earier then throw in the towel...not enough time in the day, you know?

Ok, I ran the HD Tune Pro, it found nothing damaged and no problems. I give up. I just don't get it. Ugh. I think my best bet is to reinstall at this point which I'll probably do tomorrow. I have a windows 7 disc, I may say the heck with vista and install the 7, hoping I can still use my back up to restore at least some stuff....

I have installed win7 instead of vista and the drive is working fine. Not sure what was going on but now when I start up it comes up with a screen that asks if I want to go into win7 or win8 (recovered)? Strange but I just pick which one I want to go in and go from there...they both seem to be working properly, and it looks like I can restore most of my "stuff" from the backup I did with vista. Just not programs I'm sure. THanks for all your help...still gonna be in the market for a new computer...

Very cool! You're up and running! :)

Did you lose any important files?

You didn't have the optional boot screen before?! Did you know you were supposed to get one? I was under the assumption you did. 1st time dual booting? It was mine, but mine installed without hitches, so I got the screen. Well, we live and learn.

All in all, perhaps a blessing to upgrade to 7, for it will be supported longer. But now you have to learn two OSs?

Well, so far I'm not finding anything lost, it seemed to transfer EVERYTHING in from vista....finding alot of my programs under windows.old and some of them actually have the install file in them so I'm able to run them without re-downloading them. I was going to start organizing and get rid of stuff anyways. And, I already have win7 on a laptop so I'm familiar with it. No, I didn't have the dual boot screen before, always had to press f12 to get to it...this is nice!
Thanks again for all the help, it's much appreciated!
