Can't update to Windows 8.1

Yes it the same as doing upgrade install, it just replaces with a fresh version of itself. It should keep everything, except updates and possibly one or two 3rd party drivers.

Curious. It could have been those drivers would be dumped. but there appears to be something holding on to them, and bcd.

What a/v are you using? edit : it appears not to be a/v , but Rollbackrx causing the problem .It is likely the owner of those drivers. You would need to stop the services from starting. The best thing is to uninstall it. Or maybe you could just turn it off. That means disabling the services.

Those drivers shieldm.sys shieldf.sys are signed by Horizon Data Sys - these guys:RollBack Rx System Restore Software for Windows instantly fix Any PC Issue seconds Goback Restore Making IT simple PC time machine

Rollbackrx seems to be blocking the upgrade. Windows might have ignored that, but it can't even copy the bcd store as it is being used by another process - probably Rollbackrx again.

oh no! was afraid of that---like I mentioned a bit earlier, I'm not even sure how to remove it as it seems to boot with the system now--meaning before the OS completes...and I also have a bunch of snapshots saved just in case things go badly--However, I also have a few system images saved on one of my external drives--used Macrium Reflect for that--so I guess I could remove it---any tips there? Revo uninstaller?

You will have to get rid of rollbackrx. If you have macrium images, you should be fine, it is a good program.

Seems it was Rollbackrx causing the problem all along.

It is good we found that out. Well done for sticking with it.
