Solved Can't get rid of charms and clock on 8.1; tried everything

Okay, it's now getting hopeless. Maybe I'll just totally revert to Linux until Windows 9 which I hear is supposed to fix this crap. I went to the Synaptics website and downloaded what appeared to be the correct driver, but when I tried to install it, it failed. Synaptics recommends that users download drivers from their computer manufacturer's site and not theirs. So I went back to the Asus website and again confirmed that no other driver seems applicable to this particular ASUS model (U56E). While I might be misunderstanding things, I'm getting weary and it appears that Windows 8.1 has beaten me. Grrr...

Maybe I'm necromancing the post, but this was useful for me to fix this annoying issue:

Make a backup of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\PlugInConfig\Defaults\CustomZones and all sub-keys, then delete it. Tested under Win8.1 using Synaptics v17.0.15 drivers (Razer not generic) and v18

to edit the registry, run regedit
