Okay, it's now getting hopeless. Maybe I'll just totally revert to Linux until Windows 9 which I hear is supposed to fix this crap. I went to the Synaptics website and downloaded what appeared to be the correct driver, but when I tried to install it, it failed. Synaptics recommends that users download drivers from their computer manufacturer's site and not theirs. So I went back to the Asus website and again confirmed that no other driver seems applicable to this particular ASUS model (U56E). While I might be misunderstanding things, I'm getting weary and it appears that Windows 8.1 has beaten me. Grrr...
