Can't do Direct Screen-Shot Capture. Thoughs?

Unfortunately, Snipping tool isn't working for Metro screen, I have to work harder and find what I'm missing.
I assure you that it is working for Metro Screen, just make sure that Snipping Tool is running and not in capture mode then go to Metro Screen, press Ctrl+Printscreen to get back into Capture Mode then use your mouse, press and hold then drag the area you want to capture.
Here is the screen shot I did while replying to you.

Thanks. Not to bug, but can you get the start screen as a whole?
NP, yes I can take the full screen capture.

Briefly skimming this thread, it sounds as a whole that the PrntScrn key is damaged or something. Try running a key testing program, sorry that I can't get a link right now as I post most of the time from my iPod.

One thing you can try, is MWSnap, I'm not sure if it works with Metro UI.

Sorry for being inconveniently short on help right now, but if it's still unanswered in the morning, I'll look into it.
Thanks much to both of you. And, to bummyfan, thanks especially for your time and effort.

"Do you know if you can get screen shots in general from the metro area with a properly functioning print screen whether used in combo with win key or alt, by itself, with snagit, or whatever?"

I don't understand why you are complicating it with Win key and alt. With a functioning PrintScreen Key, you can capture anything on the screen: Metro Screen, partial Metro Screen, Popup Menu, Cascading context menu etc.... Just follow exactly the steps that I showed earlier using Snipping Tool and Ctrl+PrintScreen.

Edit:
Use all there at once with print screen or what?
Just ding on me. The answer is ctrl or alt or Shift or any combination of those with F1-FXX or Page up, Page down etc...
And, thank you very much too.

OK, let's start it over again:
With a functioning PrintScreen Key:

  1. Start Snipping Tool. If it is in capture mode, that is the screen is kind of greyed out, then press Escape to get out of capture mode.
  2. Display the screen that you want to capture, whether it's metro screen, context menu, start menu etc...
  3. Press Ctrl + PrintScreen key, this will put Snipping tool back in capture mode without making anything disappear
  4. Use your mouse to click and drag over the area that you want to capture. If you want the full screen then move your mouse to the left top corner and drag it to the bottom right corner then release it.

With a Non functioning PrintScreen, I also have a solution for that using Snipping Tool but let's leave it for later.
Thanks very much. Tried the revised instructions. No workie for me. I think my print screen button is kaput. I'll look next at the non functioning printscreen link.

Since PrintScreen Key on your Laptop is broken, we need to map that key to another key. We'll use F8 key instead. Later on you can map to any key if you want.

Please download what I have in the ZIP file, extract it and install AutoHotkey_L_Install.exe then
Run the program. It will ask you if you want a sample file, click yes. A file called AutoHotkey.ahk will be created in My Document folder.

In the ZIP file, I also include a file AutoHotkey.ahk which has a map ctrl+Printscreen to function Key F8. Just replace this file to My Document folder. This file can be edited using notepad.

Look on the taskbar, you'll see a green icon with letter H, right click on that and click on "Reload This Script".

Now your function key F8 is mapped to ctrl+PrintScreen key.
  1. run Snipping Tool, if it appears to be greyed out then press ESC key, otherwise, leave it alone.
  2. Display your Metro Screen
  3. Since we map the key to be F8, press F8, The screen should appear to be greyed out
  4. Click and hold the mouse down then drag to capture.

NOTE: AutoHotkey is just a small program that allows you to map one key to another from your keyboard.

@Brummyfan,
I am glad that you finally got it working. FYI, The Snipping tool is a very powerful tool that allows you to capture all kind of things including popup menu, Start Menu with nested trees, cascading context menu etc...
Look on the dropdown from the New, you can freeform snip, windows snip, Fullscreen snip....

  1. I thought he said at the beginning that he already tried the method in the tutorial.
  2. His PrintScreen Key is broken
  3. With Snipping tool, you can do a lot quicker and you don't have to copy and paste using paint.

I didn't see anything about the key being broken, only that he couldn't take a screenshot.

I had updated the tutorial and posted it here to see if that may help with the issue or not. ;)

However, whatever works is best. :)

Yes, Shawn. The whole thread is boiled down to one broken PrintScreen Key and that's why we had to do the key mapping to another key.

Back from the gym. Before the gym, I got the program to work. After restarting my computer after the gym, here is what I need to do to get the snipper to work on the start screen--which is great as far as I am concerned. Upon restart, the program is not running.

1. So, I now have an AutoHotKey Shortcut. I double click it, and the program starts/is shown in the notification area.
2. I start the Snipping Tool; it is not greyed.
3. I go to the start screen and use F8. Nothing apparent happens.
4. I am in the start screen, but I go again.
5. The start screen reappears greyed, and I can use the snipping tool as expected--for a rectangular snip.

So, let's say I want a free-form snip. Then, assuming AutoHotKey is running,

1. I start the snipping tool and choose free-form snip--which greys the screen.
2. I use escape to get rid of the grey.
3. I go to the start screen and use F8. Nothing apparent happens.
4. I am in the start screen, but I go again.
5. The start screen reappears greyed, and I can make my free-form snip.

It's a tad. Involved, but I am very happy all things considered. Thanks again.

Let me know if you have any thoughts about what is going on. But, remember, I am happy.

PS I don't yet know what will happen if I go deeper into the metro interface and what to do a snip. We'll see.
