Solved Cannot Ping my own PC
I have a problem with 2 PC which are networked. I try to ping my PC which has a fixed ip of 192.168.1.135 and I get an error message. The screen below shows the results when I had NO firewall installed on my pc (running Win 8.1). The other PC (running Win 7) also has a fixed IP 192.168.1.149 and I cannot ping it from my PC or from itself in command prompt.
My PCs are networked and I have no problem using my file manager to see each PC from the other PC.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions

It is dependent on the router settings. As long as the computer is getting an IP from the router, able to get online, no IP conflicts, do not worry about it.

I do need to worry about it because since I cannot ping the PC I am also having problems setting up an FTP account. So I am hoping to solve the ping and then hopefully that will resolve the error message I get when I try to connect using FTP

From the start menu, search for file and print sharing. In there you will find by default that the box does not respond to pings. Networking works just fine without this.
This will not have any impact or fix your FTP issue I'm afraid.

Sorry, i wasn't on my 8.x computer when I posted earlier. You need to turn on File and Print sharing...that is what makes pings works.

All of the PC are on the same homegroup and they all have an IP of 192.168.1.xxx

But what subnet mask do you have set. That determines which subnet they are actually on. if you have the subnet said differently you would actually need a router to router the traffic between the two subnets. so you need to check and make sure that the subnet mask is the same.

Please tell me how to find my subnet so I can answer you (1 PC is Win 8.1 and 2 PCs are Win 7).

It will be under the TCP/IP properties of your network adapter, under the networking and sharing center in control panel.
You can also check from the command line
ipconfig /all

All of the PC are set to automatically obtain IP, subnet and DNS. The subnet is 255.255.255,0
I found the problem. There is a setting in Norton Internet Security which needs to be set to "full Trust" and then pings work fine.
Thanks for trying to help me.

Glad you figured out the problem. Another reason I'm happy I dropped the big name AV companies years ago. Used to have all kinds of screwy problem like you just dealt with. No more.
