Speaking of smartphone. The W8P is a real tablet OS which works beautifully. I really wonder why they did not use that for the tablets. It is a very efficient and safe OS. But now they are doing it backwards. They retrofit some of 8.1 to W8P. The world on it's head.

Shawn, we have no disagreement. My point is simply that the 8 systems were designed from the wrong end for the desktop users that have no touch. I have 3 desktops and 4 laptops without touch and I can find absolutely no justification to dish out a lot of money to upgrade to 8.1.

Even if I tuned it with all the tricks that we know, there is just not enough additional desirable function to spend any maney. And the performance point is pretty moot for me because all my systems run from SSDs.

The 8.1 that I run with VMware Player on my desktops from the external SSD is very interesting as a study object and to help me answer questions on the 8-forums. But I would not like to run my daily operations on it.

Don't forget that I have been implementing, designing and managing operatng systems for 35 years. I know very well that MS could have clearly seperated the desktop and the tablets. But they wanted to push a 'strategy' rather than make their customers happy. I have seen that before - it never worked.

I don't disagree with that mate, but I just wanted to point out that what you posted below wasn't true. That's all.

Bottom line: When they designed Windows 8, they forgot the desktop user. And that's why nobody wants it. Now they want to pacify us with tidbits but it ain't gonna work. A tablet OS will not fly on a desktop.

No problem Shawn. In the context, your answer was correct. But that is like my Chinese takeout. They have a table and a chair, but that does not make them a restaurant. Same with Windows 8. It has a desktop application, but that does not make it a desktop OS.
