Buying 4GB RAM for DELL Inspiron 3542

I cannot find a 3542 model dell laptop on Crucial.

According to this only one slot is available in the Inspiron 15 3542

Best way to find that is, contact the seller - send the seller a message through eBay asking for the exact model number, exact specs like processor, operating system pre installed, RAM, HDD . Is the seller covered under eBay guarantee scheme?

Just had another quick question. Which Graphic card is better: nVidia GeForce 840M (2GB GDDR3) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M ??? Which one? I assume the 720M is old and 840M is better.

I'm late to this thread, but I used to work the Dell forums and we always recommended Crucial memory for non Dell branded memory. Crucial guarantees their memory to work in a Dell. Dell's have a history of compatibility issues with some non-Dell brands.

That is NOT the same laptop as the one that the OP wishes to buy.

I would wait until after the laptop is received and then use the Crucial system scanner to determine what RAM is required.

The most crucial question right now is that does the laptop really has only one slot for RAM?? I mean as far as i have known and heard, any laptop has at least 2 slots. Both which are normally used up.

Mine had 2 slots, with one unused. It is normally there for expanding memory later.

Yes, it's right to wait until the laptop arrives as strollin suggested.

It is a crap shoot whether one of the two slots will really be empty. It depends what the manufacturer has on hand at the time and what is cheaper, two sticks that equal total installed RAM or one stick. I'd definitely wait to see when you get it.

I used the Crucial Scan to find my type RAM.
It worked good.
