You say no BSOD without Verfifier, are you booting without essential drivers?

It BSOD w/ verifier with all drivers enabled. Selectively disabling drivers did not do the trick and it would still BSOD until I disabled ntoskrnl.exe from being verified in verifier then it would not BSOD.

Can you run window the hardware assistant (from within windows 8)?
Upgrade to Windows 8 - Microsoft Windows

Upgrade assistant came out fine. It just said Secure Boot isn't compatible with my PC.

Yes i am going not uninstall powerdvd and the asus software. I'm doing a system image backup just in case these uninstalls do not solve the problem I can reinstall windows 8 and run verifier with no programs installed.

That did it! I uninstalled powerdvd and Asus software suite and now with verifier enabled there isn't a BSOD on startup. Now the only thing is that even after I uninstalled the asus software, the driver Asupio.sys is still active. I ended up renaming it to .bak. Searching online it seems to be related to hardware monitoring, I assume for Asus utilities. I'll try reinstalling the Asus suite and see if it was the powerdvd solely causing all these issues. I need to have the asus utilities to control

Regardless, hopefully the original BSOD with hal.dll doesn't show up anymore.

Thanks everyone for their help. I appreciate all of your time.

Just to update. I reinstalled AI Suite (Asus software) and ran verifier again and it did not BSOD. So therefore it was powerdvd that was causing the BSOD with verifier running. Now hopefully it was also the cause of the intermittent BSOD I got with hal.dll.

Unfortunately the original BSOD occurred again. I have attached the minidump. I actually put in my replacement motherboard a few days back. So it seems to be unrelated to any motherboard components. I would appreciate if anyone can tell me if this minidump provides any new clues.

I'm thinking of now removing other components from my computer including my Hauppauge PCIE tv tuner, and my pcie firewire card (the latter is disabled in device manager, but I may remove it anyway). Besides that I can remove my video card (but I have also changed that recently from a NVIDIA model to ATI) so I'm pretty sure it cant be that since the error occurred with both video cards in and with both motherboards.

The only other component is memory. I will rerun memtest overnight and see what turns up. But like I said earlier it did one pass fine, but I'll do six passes as recommended. Theres really nothing else in my computer besides hard drives and dvdrom drives. And at least the dvd rom drives had no problem with my old setup. The hard drives are SMART status ok.

Just looking at components, my top potential culprits are either the tv tuner or memory. Can software cause this issue?

I really appreciate everyones help.

Edit: added minidump attachment

This is a power state error (0x9f bug check code). You do not need to physically remove anything from your system; Disabling their drivers in the device manager will very likely do the job.

The last posted minidump was a 0x9f but was non-specific.

Thanks. I will disable the tv tuner in device manager. This is a pretty frustrating problem. I don't quite recall having so much trouble solving an issue like this one. I wish the BSOD would occur more frequently making it easier to troubleshoot.

Unfortunately another BSOD even after I disabled the tv tuner in device manager. It is another 0x9f. Please let me know if the minidump provides any additional details. I am at a loss as to what is causing this. Any other ideas? Thanks again for your help.
