Best free file (/directory) scanner for detecting malware?

I have Bitdefender updating once in 3h with max security and doesn't interfere with the performance.
It mostly depends on how you set up the security.

My experience with Kaspersky is totally the opposite with least security.

I prefer a lot of setup in the begin, that I can easily learn, forget and remember fast when I need it.
My father has Bitdefender internet security 2015. I found it didn't give me enough options while I was setting bitdefender up for him.

Windows Defender, AVG, Avast and Kaspersky doesn't provide that to me if I believe my feelings.

McAfee was preinstalled, but after the license expired I removed it because it extremely slowed down everything while doing nothing.
