bad, bad, bad

@KYHI: Ok, thanks. Why do I keep missing the little details in these threads

I'll go back and revisit the posts to satisfy my curiosity (I'd be dead long ago if I were a cat ;))

I'm not sure if this helps, but take a look:

Bill,
1. Open an elevated command prompt, and do either step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.

net user administrator /active:yes

Run the downloaded media creation tool.exe on your vista machine.. And then boot to that setup media on the laptop

1) create setup media using any PC
2) boot messed up PC from media
3) hit F10 to bring up command prompt
4) enable Admin account > net user administrator /active:yes
5) reboot to windows, create a New Admin User, delete local user account..

Five steps and your done..

Would somebody please verify that the setup media will download in another OS.. I am most sure it does..
But cant verify because I have all win8 pc's

One more option:

Go to Start Screen > Press and Hold Shift Key > Click Power Button > Restart
You will enter the screen where three options are provided.
Choose Troubleshoot Option > choose “Reset Your PC” > click “next” and follow the prompts to reset.

When I downloaded the file on my vista, I then tried to run it. It said that I can only do it from windows 7 or greater...although I didn't right click to run it as administrator on vista. Didn't know if that would make any different or not, by then is when I tried to runit on win8. That's when I found out I cant run any .exe files. So #1 on the instructions, "create setup media using any pc"....didn't work for me. Hmmm. Lol

I realized that. I typed it the right way with spaces...I got the same screen.

I don't think I need any help or advice as I'm sure its done. Unless anyone wants to help contribute to the $40 fund for the recovery usb from toshiba.

I bought recovery dvds from Gateway for $20.
I have had to use them twice. :(

I do not regret spending the $20. :)

I suppose I won't regret it either as this has turned in a headache. Lol. I've been using windows since 3.1 and have got into some trouble over the years, but I've always managed to figure it out. There's a lot more involved these days and now that I'm older...I want simple and I guess simple costs $40 haha

If you ever get in a bind again you will have recovery at hand.

I also keep 2 Macrium Reflect system images on hand now.

Bill,
1. Open an elevated command prompt, and do either step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.
We cant get access - as we don't have admin privlages

I was afraid of that, yet another miss when reading the thread. I went back and searched for elevated - not found, so I searched for admin. I see where you suggested running a Command Prompt (Admin) and it would not launch.

Once again I have not helped much, I'm just glad I'm not sending people off on a wild goose chase thanks to you keen eyes
... carry on :)

try OPTION TWO in:
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

That should work on any PC, you'll need software to burn it.

ImgBurn should do the trick.
The Official ImgBurn Website

Do NOT click on the advertisement Download button at the top.

:ar: Scroll down to the News section and click on the download text link for the version that runs on Vista (the latest might, I don't know for sure)

He can't do that either.. Needs Admin Privileges to run media tool.. Already tried that too..
And his other machine is vista - so it don't work either..

There is no guide for this... But Thanks..

Although, I have found the answer he needs.

Well I think I solved his problem, with him not being able to download and boot his PC..

I uploaded Windows Recovery Environment ..

He just needs to download the needed ISO version for his PC and then create recovery media

Windows 8.1 Recovery Environment 64 Bit - WinREx64 ISO

Windows 8.1 Recovery Environment 32 Bit - WinREx86 ISO

and thats just it. ive got a machine that wont run .exe(s) which is essentially locked. the other machine is a dinosaur that wont open the media creator for windows 8.1 iso because...well...its a dinosaur. lol. i am downloading the 64 bit iso now on the vista now as im typing this. i was about to ask if anyone had an iso file that i could load onto a flash drive, but i didnt know if that was "legal" here. lol plus if there were "risks"

OPTION TWO and OPTION THREE
Do not use the Media Creation Tool, they download the ISO from the MS Store.

But you need a Retail key to download the ISO.

Downloading and burning images to disc work on ancient machines.

You can force windows recovery by powering on the pc and when windows starts to boot (second logo appears) pull the power plug on the PC or press and hold power button to shut off..

3 failed attempts to boot windows will trigger windows recovery

then reset pc..

I figured what the hell...what's the worst that could happen? The factory USB will be here in couple days. Lol. At least I got it to delete!!!
