Hi there
I'm confused here

Why ON EARTH would you need to install this -- Windows Defender (built in to the kernel) is 100% good enough for HOME users so why on earth would you need to bother with this stuff on W8.

3rd party AV software for W8 these days is as DEAD as a DODO.

Also it's no point listing various technical journals listing "effectiveness" or "performance" of AV software -- these are ALWAYS at least a FEW WEEKS out of date by the time they are published -- a new attack can be developed at any time and in any case 99.9% of the best protection is not AV software BUT YOU YOURSELF.

I know loads of people who have never had a Virus in over 20 years or more of using computers and who haven't installed any AV software at all. !!

The basic Windows firewall, your own router, HOW YOU USE EMAIL AND THE INTERNET and Windows defender built in to W8 is MORE than enough.

Cheers
jimbo

I like BitDefender 2013 although it interfered with something I want to do. So, I uninstalled it on 8. I am using Windows Defender without too much fear. BitDefender is much, much better. I won't argue the point.

Windows 7 MSE, not Windows 8 Defender. Also, not so reputable AV "testing" company whom of which is probably paid off and/or biased to promote other products like most of these "testing" companies do.

Also, see one of the comments which holds full truth to it:

Internetlad: "The lowest score it receives is for zero-day attacks, where it catches 71/100 infections. 2-3 month old infections it catches 92/100 and for widespread infections it catches 100/100.

How this merits a 1.6/6 is absolutely beyond me. It makes it appear that it fails to catch over 70 percent of all viruses with that ranking."

I hate that. Can't believe the irresponsibility and pervasiveness of sites using undated pages/data to "communicate" what can easily be mistaken to be, for example, current technical info.

Yes, all of them need to be taken with a grain of salt. It seems Defender is better than previous MS offerings, and is part of the OS, and enabled by default. Good job on that. In light of this I may remove the AV I have. People like us on this forum tend to be more aware of our surfing habits, and less likely to click yes on something stupid.

Sorry, still find AVG is complete and utter garbage.
Just came across a system with AVG Toolbar installed, could not uninstall it no matter what I did.
Can't use 3rd party uninstallers, AVG's uninstaller is complete garbage and just had to disable it in IE Add-On's

Still can't pay me to install anything AVG on any system.

To each his own I guess. Its been good for me. I swap AV every few months, never an issue uninstalling, or re-installing multiple times. As always YMMV...

I am still coming across PC's that are hosed, and what AV are they running? AVG.
Sorry, it's too coincidental.

Either it can not be uninstalled cause it's installer is toast, or msinstaller is toast, or there are other issues, that I can not say for sure, but far too coincidental to NOT be AVG causing the issue.

Besides,, I would never take a rag like PCMag seriously on this stuff, can anyone say for certain there wasn't some Kickback?

The only one I really take seriously is AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software
And this is why,,, Funding
