How to Create Turn On or Off Airplane Mode Shortcuts in Windows 8 and 8.1​

   Information

You can turn Airplane mode on or off in Windows 8 to enable or disable all wireless radio devices (ex: Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, Bluetooth) at once in your PC or device.

This tutorial will provide you with shortcuts that you can pin or use where you like to quickly "Turn On Airplane Mode" or "Turn Off Airplane Mode" with a single click in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

   Note

You will only have the Airplane mode feature available on a mobile Windows 8 PC or device (ex: laptop, tablet, mobile phone, etc...) that has a wireless network connection (ex: Wi-Fi, mobile broadband, Bluetooth).

EXAMPLE: "Turn On Airplane Mode" (left) or "Turn Off Airplane Mode" (right) shortcuts
NOTE: These are just what the icons of the shortcuts look like.

Here's How:

1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what Windows you have installed.

2. For Only Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.​

3. For Only Windows 8.1 Update

​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.​

4. Save the .zip file to your desktop.

5. Open the .zip file, and extract (drag and drop) both the Turn On Airplane Mode.exe and Turn Off Airplane Mode.exe files to your desktop.
NOTE: These are standalone .exe files that have digital signatures and do not install or add anything to your computer.

6. You can now move the .exe files to where you like to use them at, then Pin to Taskbar, Pin to Start, add to Quick Launch, or create shortcuts from the .exe files.

NOTE: If you create shortcuts from the .exe files, then you could also assign a keyboard shortcut to each shortcut.

They're still working just fine for me in Windows 8.1.

As a test, see if you can press the keys in the order below to turn on Airplane Mode. This is what the .exe file simulates with a slight pause between each step.

Yes, that worked fine. Looks like the TAB step isn't working right. It acts like a down arrow instead and selects Personalization

Odd, but that would be the problem. The Tab key should normal take you to the first item in the next section (below the line) which would be the Network icon by default.

Did you change the function of the Tab key at any time?

No Your test sequence, manually entered, worked fine.

Here's a test .exe in the ZIP below that increases the pause time between each simulated key press to see if it may have been going to fast for you. You'll need to extract the .exe and unblock it before running it to test.

Yes, that did it - wasn't really that slow either. Now, what I'd REALLY like is a version that just switches off and on Wifi

Great news Dan. I'll whip you up a new set of on/off shortcuts for this that will be digitally signed here in a bit, and post back with them when ready.

I wish I could do one for only Wi-Fi, but it's location in Networks varies to much from system to system to be able to create a universal shortcut.

Awesome - thanks for your help - you know, I just discovered that if you tap on the wifi bars in the tray, it's just one more tap to turn it off...

Still I think I would use your shortcut, probably as a taskbar button

I'm afraid that I haven't seen one yet for airplane mode or Wi-Fi to toggle either on/off.

I skimmed through but have a question (my win 8.1 machine) ...would it be possible to include a way to toggle certain devices & not others ?? I want to be able to toggle on/off my bluetooth radio without affecting my wifi, etc. Can it be done by a shortcut ? TIA!!

Those program works properly in my laptop. But I was wondering if we can do it in cmd. Can we?

I searched google for some articles and found no way to do it with cmd. Because my problem is sometimes my wifi connection goes from "Connected" to "Limited". The only way to solve it is to turn on and then turn off the airplane mode. I want to do it in cmd because I have a program that would automatically trigger one ".bat" file when my laptop does not detect any internet connection between time intervals, and a bat file, as far as I know (I'm not really an expert), runs cmd commands inside it. So I won't have to reconnect it manually.

Do you know the solution for this?
