Windows 8.1: Most Metro Apps crash immediately at launch

    Hello,
After having (hopefully) solved the idle-to-sleep issues of my clean installed Windows 8.1 OS, having installed and configured all the software I need, I felt almost ready and relieved to finally create a backup image of my system. However, I have just realised that most built-in Metro Apps have stopped working.

In detail, Weather, Maps, Mail, Skype, Calendar, Contact, Stocks (and probably few more) do not work, i.e., when I click-open them, there is the short animation in which the App symbol is magnified to full screen, and then immediately afterwards I am sent back to the Metro interface. However, the apps do still appear in the Metro Apps' taskbar on the left side of the screen. Re-Opening them from there leads gives the same result.

Very few apps work, like Skydrive, Photos and Store.

I can confirm that I neither had this issue with Windows 8 nor right after my Windows 8.1 installation, which is when I checked Metro apps for the last time.

I have no idea what settings in the meantime have caused this disruption, I can only say that I have not done any real work with the computer since the fresh install but merely installed and configured everything to my specifications.

Just for the sake of ruling out some possible causes, I can confirm that: I have no third-party firewall or antivirus programs installed; that I have no nvidia or ATI/AMD graphics card, just the Intel HD 4000 onboard graphics; and that I use the most recent drivers everywhere.

I have already read Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter - Fix Apps in Windows 8 and gone through most of the points, except the refresh install, which I would like to avoid since this is a newly installed computer.

The following errors are reported in the application event log of Windows:
    1) Event id 10: "Fehler beim Laden der Anwendungseinstellungen für Paket "Microsoft.BingMaps_8wekyb3d8bbwe". Fehlercode: 5" This is the original German message, translated to english this means:
"Error loading applications settings for package "...". Error code: 5"

I get this type of error for every app I launch, and a few more errors like:
    2) Event id 5973: "Bei der Aktivierung der App „Microsoft.BingMaps_8wekyb3d8bbwe!AppexMaps“ ist folgender Fehler aufgetreten: Der Remoteprozeduraufruf ist fehlgeschlagen.. Weitere Informationen finden Sie im Protokoll „Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Betriebsbereit“."
Translated: The following error occurred while activating the app "...": The remote procedure call failed. You can find more information in the protocoll/log "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Idle""

    3) Event id 1000: "Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: Map.exe, Version: 2.0.2210.2336, Zeitstempel: 0x5257124f
Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: Windows.UI.Xaml.dll, Version: 6.3.9600.16408, Zeitstempel: 0x523d4b78
    Ausnahmecode: 0xc000027b
    Fehleroffset: 0x0000000000a4f30a
    ID des fehlerhaften Prozesses: 0x16bc
    Startzeit der fehlerhaften Anwendung: 0x01cecd3c75b473cc
Pfad der fehlerhaften Anwendung: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.BingMaps_2.0.2210.2336_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Map.exe
    Pfad des fehlerhaften Moduls: C:\Windows\System32\Windows.UI.Xaml.dll
    Berichtskennung: b426a098-392f-11e3-826b-bc5ff436f87c
Vollständiger Name des fehlerhaften Pakets: Microsoft.BingMaps_2.0.2210.2336_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
Anwendungs-ID, die relativ zum fehlerhaften Paket ist: AppexMaps"

I have not had much luck googling these errors, probably because with the of Windows 8.1 many new errors were introduced?

    Thanks for any help,
    Steve

I have achieved SOME progress by establishing which apps are broken one by one and then uninstalling and reinstalling them.

I have got most apps to work at first but often they break again (crash at launch as before) or Windows reports that they need to be repaired (have had this with the Weather app a number of times). Another quirk is that often Windows store gave an error (0x80073cf9) while trying to install some apps (e.g. Health & Fitness). After retrying many times, I've been able to install all apps, but it does not feel to be a very stable state as things can break again unexpectedly.

To me, it all looks like new bugs introduced with Windows 8.1.

I suspected that the fact that I use one Microsoft Live/Skydrive account as my main account on two computers could be causing issues, although both have been updated to 8.1. Therefore, I disabled app syncing. However, this is nothing more than a workaround to a very basic feature that should be working fine. To give an example, think of the Apple app store - never encountered issues of this magnitude, neither on iOS nor Mac OS devices.

That is a big groan from me also. No crash report, my weather app and a few others just dump me back into the desktop. I tried going from local account to my Microsoft's live account login but that did not help. At least this ONE problem I can ignore as I do not use any apps at all. But being a troubleshooter for HP for most of my life, I am sure I will try to "fix it".

Same problem here. I googled and this is the only page I find the problem on. I hope you find a resolution, I'll subscribe to this feed.

Apps crashing: Weather, food, news, solitare. Skype was crashing but it was somehow fixed.

Pcinski, welcome to the Win8/8.1 forums. We usually find solutions, lots of very talented people here. There may be LOTS of posts to wade through, tho, heh.

I just installed solitaire and it worked for me. For that one, you may be able to just uninstall and reinstall as Steve did above.

As for any app that requires a "real time feed" (when the pictures change automatically for instance), they seem to be truly broke.

Please post what type of error you are getting when you click on, say, weather. Me, I just crash to desktop while Steve gets a report. I just may not have notification or error reporting turned on tho.

My worst problem is that I have no experience with the Start Menu as I never use it! I do not know how to change the settings of the apps, just PC settings.

    Thanks for the welcome.

I tried uninstalling and installing everything, only skype worked after.

They crash to desktop. I don't get a report when the app crashes, but I looked through the event viewer and it's about the same thing that Steve has.

I will post these, since I guess they are easier to read in english:

also this sometimes appears, it looks as it may be the source of the problem:

Message: OnVisibilityChange: A market update was detected. Closing app.

Thanks Pcinski! I am seeing similar results on the event viewer (and thanks for telling me WHERE to look for the errors!). The nice little "ask for help" does nothing.

What I find very frustrating is that even when an app works at first, it can somehow break again.

This 8.1 update really gives me the feeling that Microsoft did not invest enough money into testing their software and basically exploits us, the power users and early adopters.
