I've been saying for weeks now that "Win 8 is ok, but I'm just not excited about it in the same way that I was aboutn 7, and I can't figure out why."
I had put it down to the fact that I REALLY like 7, and so I was just grumbling at having to learn a new way of doing things, but today it hit me why.
Windows 8 makes me less productive. It's not even (directly) Metro's fault. As an example, I should not have to google how to shut an OS down. It should be obvious. To quote John, "I hope it reacts well to having the power cable pulled, because that's what's going to happen".
Then, when you do finally figure out how to shut it down, it takes a good 30 seconds longer to actually find and click shutdown rather than just hitting the good old Win>Right>Enter or even just clicking Start>Shutdown under 7.
Another example, Network and Sharing Centre. If you click the little network icon on the desktop, it brings up a completely NON functional window, informing you what network you are on. So then I Start Menu search network and sharing centre. Now, rather than just bringing it up as 7 would, I have to click across to Settings and then select it. Why? 7 always knew what I meant, without filtering.
This I personally think is symptomatic of a bigger problem within 8. Yes, the OS is faster and more responsive. However, everything takes longer to do!
Don't get me wrong, I like 8, I'm just very... on the fence about it at the moment. I'm waiting to see where it goes. Yes I know this is just the beta, but I think it's fair to say by this point, its probably a fairly accurate representation of what we are going to get.
