Hi, I have only been using windows 8 for a few weeks and I am still getting my head round it. I have copied some documents from my old laptop onto my new one and have notice that most of the files are now all mixed up. I am trying to drag and drop them into the order in which I want them set out, for example my bank statements, utility bills etc are no longer in date order. I have tried to do it from the drop down box which says descending, ascending, date etc, but they are still all mixed up. Is there a way to drag and drop a file so that I can slot it into the place I want it to be, like you can with photos in Picasa, there doesn't seem to be a drag and drop in windows 8 (or am I missing it somewhere along the line)?
Thanks for any suggestions.
However, instead of trying to do that and arranging your files manually by dragging & dropping, a better solution that will be more future proof would be to rename your files with a reverse date at the beginning of the file names (for example: 2013-12-31 Utility Bill, 2014-01-05 Bank Statement, etc.), and then get into the habit of naming all future files in the same way. That way when you move them from computer to computer they'll already be in date order due to the beginning of the file names being in Year Month Day order.
Just out of interest, you said you tried sorting them by date, there is more than one date that can be used to sort, such as Date Created, Date Modified, etc. but that won't be of much help if they weren't scanned/created in a particular date/time order in the first place. If they were scanned/created in date order, then try sorting them in File Explorer by 'Date Created', instead of using 'Date Modified' and see if that puts then into the order you want them.
