What Chance of Windows 8 being the new Vista?

The irony is, we could have used the cloud when we had slow CPU's and 256k Ram. But now that multi core CPU's and 4+ Gigs ram are the norm, and faster and more powerful is coming every day, then having a PC running only in the cloud would only seem to be a benefit for businesses and portable devices. I guess it's also about what "age" you are, PC wise. Some , like me, prefer to have our "stuff" on our PC's. I'll backup online if I want to. And certainly I use "cloud like" things already, like web based email. But let me decide how I'll do my computing, don't decide for me the cloud is what it's going to be. A Guy

Apart from todays capabilities to do everything on your own system, there is also the question of internet speed. Now, the upload/download speeds are the weakest link in the whole chain. I am just uploading a little video of 75MBs on my other machine. It is 22% complete and still has 23 minutes to go - and that with DSL 3000. I do not see myself sending my daily images of 22GBs to the cloud. It will probably not be done the next morning. So you would have to have a dedicated "cloud server" that does nothing but shove the data around.

Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. Windows 8 will be like Win7 sp3 + some of "the cloud". You probably will see Win7 sp2 late this year.

I do not think so. I think it will be more of a revolution than an evolution. Has to be, in the face of the developments in the portable devices and ARM market. Laptops will slowly disappear and be replaced by Tablets - even Smartphones a la Motorola Atrix. PCs will be for servers, gamers and people who need that extra power.

I tend to agree. Also it seems to me that Vista was necessary. It prepared the way for W7. It got us all thinking about upgrading our machines for a start. After the Service Pack I thought it was an excellent OS.
If W8 is to be anything more than an upgrade to W7 it needs to be as revolutionary as Vista was to XP. MS have got to give us a reason to buy it. J

I don't think laptops will disappear any time soon. There seems to be a growing trend to replace desktops at home and work with powerful laptops and external multi-terabyte hard drives. Also, based on my own observations of how people conduct their business at the local Starbucks, a lot of folks rely on their laptops' abilities to read and burn CDs and DVDs. I can't envision people carrying around external burners/readers to connect to their smart phones or tablets. Of course there's always "the Cloud".

For me, CDs and DVDs have already been replaced by USB sticks. Who in this day and age uses disks - far too messy. And tablets have USB ports. Don't take the retarded iPad as an example. The portable devices are far more flexible for transport than laptops. My Sony Vaio with transport case, mouse, etc. weighs 12 pounds. Compare that to 1 pound for a tablet (which has a lot more function).

In the part of the world I live in, bandwidth is not only precious but also scarce . You cannot have it , even if you are ready to pay for it . So in such a situation, a cloud based OS would not be very easy to use , I think . Storage and RAMs are rather easily available .

So if windows 8 is really going to be cloud based, I am to think again and again before having it . It would be a real pain if I am to wait long for loading my stuff

Very good point Arc. We sometimes forget that not everyone has the bandwidth available. A Guy
