That was interesting! I used fsutil and chkdsk r/ b/ and nothing seemed to clear the error flag so I downloaded Windows 8 again to do a clean install. This time the country message didn't show so it went through all the stuff that showed up on the first installation but at the very end I had a message that it couldn't install Windows 8 and everything was set back to where it was originally. However, the hard drive error flag is gone and chkdsk comes up clean. Backups appear to be working fine now (I've been backing up to 2 external drives because I am expecting that one of these days this drive will fail).
