Random BSODs, various drivers crashing at ntoskrnl.exe

Hi all,

Have been having issues with random BSODs (DPC Watchdog Violations) on a new notebook (purchased August 2014.) There is no common thread of what is running/what I am doing when the BSOD occurs, but they are now happening with increasing frequency (1-2 times per day). Just want to solve it as it's driving me nuts.

The only thing I can say about the error is that it has never happened when I'm mobile with my laptop, i.e. not connected to the USB hub (I've also updated that driver.) It only happens when I am connected and using various peripherals, including second display, keyboard/mouse. That said, that's the set-up under which I use the machine 90% of the time so who knows if related.

Have read through a ton of forums and have tried some simple recommendations given to others with a similar issue. Unfortunately I have not kept a record of what I did, but these include scanning for malware/viruses using Norton and BitDefender, updating various drivers, disabling quick start, changing power management, etc.

I have not used any memory or disk check utilities because I can't figure out how to get Windows 8.1 to boot from USB. (I checked in BIOS and couldn't find a way to set a boot order to boot from USB, maybe I missed it). I also don't think I have a CD here.

Attached are my SF Diag logs (great tool, btw). Below is a system summary and a mini-dump summary which shows the most recent drivers involved, etc.

Any help will be HUGELY appreciated, but keep in mind I only know enough to be dangerous - I'm not uber-techie. :p

Another crash occurred while I was writing this, but I did not re-run the tool to grab the info before posting. Will run it now though and post if it involves yet a new driver or bug code.

Thank goodness for auto-save and for this forum!

Please search for updates for the drivers highlighted in red and update your Intel Graphics driver using the manufacturer's website.

Thanks softwaremaniac - I have been trolling the available updates for my model/OS on the Asus downloads page looking for that AiCharger since I've seen it referenced a number of times. However it's not listed there. All they have is something called USB Charger Plus, the latest version of which is what I have installed. Should I go ahead and update it anyhow?

Will do. Btw, the driver I have installed is the same one on the Asus site, but I'll get one from Intel.

Here's what Asus has for VGA drivers. The one at the top is what I have. The one on the bottom is a couple months older, but the version # is higher? Seems counter intuitive.

Is there any possibility that this is caused by unresponsive scripts and/or browser unresponsive errors? Firefox and Chrome both go unresponsive on certain pages. Sometimes I also get the unresponsive script dialog box (e.g. on the Asus contact form). Sometimes I kill the script, sometimes I continue.

I doubt it. Your browser might crash because of this, but not your system. My bet is the drivers are at fault.

Try using your PC for some time. If no BSOD appears, that means, you are good to go.

Will update the Intel driver as soon as I can and see what happens when I'm working through the hub. Hopefully that driver is the issue. As for the other drivers you specified, I will just ignore until we know if Intel driver is the culprit.

Just an update. I downloaded and installed the most recent Intel graphics driver from Asus (since Intel directed me back there). Machine has crashed several times since then, but only when connected to the USB hub.

I mentioned before Asus has another Intel driver that was released a couple of months earlier, but has a higher version number. I can't get any response from Asus on it. Should I go ahead and try it even though it appears they rolled back to an older version?

Although never listed in the dump files, I only BSOD when connected to my USB hub so just for the heck of it, I went back to the OEM website to see if there are any driver updates. The OEM redirects to DisplayLink where I got the driver initially when the hub didn't plug and play a couple of months ago.

There have been two updates since then - looks like DisplayLink updates the driver literally every couple of months. Not sure what's up with that, seems like a lot to me. Installed the most recent.

FWIW, I also found this thread related to USB docking stations and the SurfacePro where kernel dump log lists DisplayLink as the possible suspect causing conflicts with the Intel Graphics card - Surface Pro 2 dpc_watchdog_violation with Windows 8 - Microsoft Community

Tempted to run Driver Verifier for a day, but it creates so much system drag I can't get anything done.

Will see what happens with the most recent driver. Do you think I should set up to do a full kernel dump in case that isn't the problem? If so, is there a good utility here to output the results?

Thanks for your help, btw. :)
