The error you're getting specifically is:
    TRUST_E_NO_SIGNER_CERT
    # The certificate for the signer of the message is invalid or
    # not found.

Microsoft updated it's certificate handling recently, and the update for certificate security is this one, so I'd make sure it isn't installed at the moment. The other issue could be with the WSUS server certificate itself (getting that error while attempting to hit WSUS means it's likely ssl-enabled). There was a WSUS update released about 10 days ago that needs to be applied to the WSUS server if it's going to be servicing 2012 or Win8, so might want to talk to your admin to make sure that's been applied to all WSUS servers as well:
An update for Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 is available (KB2734608) - The WSUS Support Team Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

Post the \Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file if you can if you want it reviewed. The reason should be documented in there.

That did it! I installed the update on the WSUS server (it didn't even need a reboot) and now the Windows 8 clients can get updates. Thank you!
