Windows 8 x64 Professional Release Version UPDATE FAILS

I have installed Win 8 Professional x64 bit - the release version. Yes I do have it. Windows update fails. I have run everything I found on three different forums and Windows 8 Professional update still fails.

The install was flawless - surpised me. Windows 8 accessed the internet at the start of the install so that isn't a problem. All the drivers and BIOS are current. I can access the internet on IE 10 and that doesn't fail like internet explorer fails in Win 7 professional (yet). So does anyone, yes even you MS, know how to get Windows 8 to update?

Thanks and make sure that you have a great holiday!

Did Windows Update provide you with an error message and number? If so, have you searched using Bing/Google/Yahoo/whomever to see what turns up for that message and/or number?

Unfortuneately yes I did and the update process would give three errors, a different one after I ran what was in the help text or when I did what the other authors (including a MS person) suggested. I tried or tested every suggestion. That is why I am here asking for suggestions!

At the end or after each "repair" it eithor said it was fine or returned a good return code. Then Running Windows update would fail giving me a variation of 8024402"X" where "X" was C, F, and something else.

BTW, it was a Windows 7 Professional OS before the install of Windows 8 Professional.

Went into Win 8 and the errors I got this time were 8024402F and 8024A000 and db error 80070490. Fails, rails, fails and no way I could find to manually download the updates or update the update process manually. It still hurts when you shoot yourself in the foot! Thanks and make sure you have a nice day and please help me solve this one!

You could always try a system restore, then reattempt to install the updates.

I did call MS. The problem is a failed or corrupt cab in the Windows install process. They dont have a prescribed way to fix it per the MS Tech. Coming in a month, maybe. I am starting to like the interface. It still seems a little clumsy but it is a new way of doing things and as usual MS has invested tons in this development. Its closer to where we are going and need to go in my humble estimation. This may be the start of something good. But first ol' MS, update the darn thing!

Okay, the install disk was bad. But install 2010 Office on a Windows 8 machine and updates fail again. The repair setup - repair your installation - refresh. Now anything you installed is uninstalled. It is all gone.

MS Windows 8 corrupts or allows the corruption of its update process and no MS products update at that point. Does this mean that to setup a business machine in Windows 8 everything must be re bought and downloaded through the MS Windows 8 Store? What business is going to spend that kind of money? Which individuals will? Send them my way - thats what I do.

What is everybody else's experience with good ol' Windows Update in 8? Please advise. Make sure that you have a great day!

Without seeing the WindowsUpdate.log to confirm what's happening, all of this is conjecture ;). I've seen lots of WU errors on Win8, and I've yet to come across one that was Windows 8's fault. Anything is possible, but I've not yet seen it in a year.

Post the WU log and let's see what's in there ;).

Cluberti: "'Ive seen lots of WU errors on Win8, and I've yet to come across one that was Windows 8's fault."

I have installed the RTM, (Technet download), several times on different computers. On each occasion I have had no hiccups. The install has completed flawlessly. The OS has found all my hardware on those computers, worst case being a very old Laser printer (HP1320n). Similarly, I have installed, and reinstalled Office 2010 several times, together with 25 items of third party software which I own. To date, I have not had any errors. IE 10 gave me some problems, which I have not attempted to examine, as I have returned to FF.

Apart from Definition updates, I can see I only have one pure OS update, so far, but the updates proceed for other items, unimpeded. Currently, including Office and associated programs, I have 67 updates, including a definition update received ten minutes ago.

I agree with cluberti's comment and would suggest you attempt another download and burn.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.

Hi Cluberti, I couldn't make anything out of this log, could you please tell me what may be the problem, it's Win8 RP and have done few fresh installs ( I'll try once more while waiting ).

Disregard my previous post, (RTM). I can see that both posters are referring to the release preview. Maybe it doesn't update anymore?

Hi davehc, that's what I thought, I'm not worried about the updates but the recent claim about Adobe Flash Player updates made me concerned.

WU is working for awhile, and then it stops being able to get credentials for the driver updates provider. This could be because it's RP and WU has migrated over to RTM for drivers, but it could be something that's getting installed (it was good for 3+ days before the issues started). You could always tell Windows not to get drivers from WU:
