Service Pack for Windows 8?

Windows 8 has, of course, been designed for touch-screen. Therefore, the way I see it, some of the features really do not work as efficiently using the mouse. I know that Microsoft after a time comes out with Service Packs for their operating systems. So here's what I have been thinking. Maybe MS will come out with a Service Pack that will make it easier for those who do not have a touch screen and need to use a mouse. On the other hand, maybe MS doesn't want to make it easy to use a mouse since they want everyone to eventually have a touch screen. Does anyone else have any thought on this--that is about MS coming out with a Service Pack making it easier to use a mouse?

MS has made noises that they may go to a yearly (or so) release cycle for OS updates. Meaning that at the time that an SP1 would come out, it will actually be called Windows 9

I wonder if 9 would have the same user interface as 8?

I think they are 100% committed to it at this point, best we'd see is hopefully some major improvements in functionality.

The initial windows phones were so devoid of usability like no cut/paste! But eventually they "fixed" it. One might have hope that they will be able to fix a lot of the issues with 8. Integrate it more with the desktop rather than bee a tack-on etc. The making of the phone/tablet/pc all /identical/ was them just being a slave to dogma and that /never/ turns out the best for everyone.

Historically, Service Packs really never changed the UX or UI of Windows.

But having said that Windows Phone came out with less features than today, and here is speculation that Microsoft might move towards something more yearly; I have an inkling that might suggest a Windows 8.5 update that DOES add new UI elements to it and a few new features, maybe like ReFS as they've said it'll come later to the Windows client from Server 2012.

If I remember correctly, when MS came out with DOS 6.0, just a short time later it was changed because of some problem. It was then given the name 6.22. They then came out Windows 3 but then changed it to Windows 3.1. I don’t know if I am completely accurate on those numbers.

It depends how it goes Frank.

If MS shift a lot of copies of win8 - they won't be in a hurry to make major changes.

If it turns out a turkey - they can release something to put back the choices.

Simple as that.

They may well release something after 12 months anyway - what it contains depends on how the public have reacted to what they are pushing out now.

Hi there
that has to be ludicrous

say you have a 50 - 60 inch external monitor --- how near do you think you'll be sitting to the screen --with your nose touching it. !!!

You'd need arms as long as a garden rake to even reach the thing -- and in any case imagine using a virtual touch keyboard -- your arms would get horribly tired after composing a long document WITH ILLUSTRATIONS etc -- say mathematical type text which even the most inveterate two thumbs "texter" could render into "Text-Ese".

Even if you had something like a tablet on a HORIZONTAL surface - you could technically use a pen type device for writing - but most people I know can type considerably faster on a keyboard than they can write.

A pen is good for free hand drawing -- otherwise not much else. A mouse also still beats any other method for cutting and pasting anything -- an activity that really isn't done much on tablets and mobile phones.

Say you are in a hotel room -- with your computer plugged into the nice big LCD TV in your hotel room and you are sitting on your bed with a wireless keyboard and a glass of "something nice" on the bedside table..

Now you can comfortably surf / email or whatever from several METRES away in or on the Bed -- forget touch in this type of scenario. What is it about "Touch screens" that seems to have got everybody worked up about -- as I said fine for tablets and phones -- but FORGET IT on a REAL PC for a lot of times.

What has to be ludicrous? The question I asked, the statement I made, or Win 9 using a mouse and keyboard?

I think he means if MS does this:

MS doesn't want to make it easy to use a mouse since they want everyone to eventually have a touch screen.

It would be very silly of them.

The whole point of Win8 (as if it is not obvious) is to have an integrated UI experience across all platforms.
(ie. Phone, Desktop, Tablet, Xbox, possibly other devices that someone throws out with WinRT)

The synch integration of the tablet to desktop and vice-versa with personalization/passwords IE settings, Explorer Settings and possibly with the next Xbox UI update are pretty interesting.

We will not completely find out how effective or popular this will all be till probably at least April or May 2013.

I think around that time will say all there is to say about the success or failure of Windows 8.

Not to mention Server 2012
