I accepted the notification to install (4) important updates on my son's Win 8.1 laptop earlier this evening and it appears to have been a poor decision. The laptop has been hung at "Preparing to install..." for nearly an hour. I have pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del to see if keyboard input would help and this did not. I also connected the AC adapter and noticed the status bar does not update yet, the charging LED on the lower fascia of the laptop is on.
Edit - Laptop remains powered on; no screen saver or hibernate. At some point, I suspect I will simply have to power down the laptop by pressing the power button for 5 seconds yet, prefer to obtain some comments before reaching for this action as a potential solution. I will not leave the laptop on overnight. If I power it down past 9:30 EST it will remain of until 12/17.
Edit 2 - Chose to power down for a few minutes. Rebooted and all (4) Important Updates want to be downloaded again. I will identify these tomorrow and work from this point.
