It was published in 2015.
I don't use Windows Defender but Avast instead.
I'm wondering why it has suddenly appeared and if I need to install it?

Thanks

It's just a Windows Defender malware component patch released by MS to improve functionality. If you installed this past month's Security Monthly Quality Rollup (KB4019215), which supersedes KB3038936, you can just hide it.

Not necessary that much if you are using windows defender. For me using third party anti virus seems to more safer than what Microsoft did.

Something funny going on with updates - marking as "Important" an ancient patch that has been superseded is simply wrong.

And certainly shouldn't happen years after the fact.

I think I'm going to just sit on this update til more contemporary Internet hits show up.

[edit: just checked version numbers - this update is for version 4.8.... and the version already installed on my system is 4.10...]

Though not really relevant to this thread, I installed Defender due to the vast improvements made to it (and commented on by many MUCH more learned about antivirus programs than I) - it has not done me wrong - free - autoupdates - it works.

AND...

Seems to have MUCH less impact on my ancient 8.1 machine than the prior setup of Avast with Malwarebytes.
