Is Windows 8.1 Update process faulty?

I am used to Windows 7 OS in which the Windows Update (WU) process creates a restore point (RP) before installing updates. I have recently installed Windows 8.1 64 bit OS on my computer and find that the WU process downloads and then installs updates without creating a RP. I checked my available RPs and find no RPs created by WU. I thought RPs were triggered by WU?

I have “Automatic System Restore Point Creation” enabled and my System Restore “Max Usage” settings were set at (2%) 10.00GB with only 2.01GB used so there was 8GB free space available. I have increased this to (5%) 23.29GB as a precaution, although I do not think this was the problem.

I can’t find any setting where I can force W8.1 WU to create a RP before installing updates. It seems that one must create a restore point manually before doing WUs?

Am I missing something or is this normal behaviour for W8.1? If so then the W8.1 WU process has a serious weakness in it.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

The answer seems to be that Windows Task Scheduler will not create a restore point if there has already been one created in the last seven days and it seems that “Windows Update” is treated as a “scheduled task” even if run on demand.

I tested this by waiting more than seven days to check and install updates and a RP was created. So I am going to mark this as "Solved".
