I downloaded kb3192392 for win 8.1 64-bit, then tried to install it. Win kept searching for updates, so I stopped it. Meanwhile the Win Update service generated high CPU usage. I "repaired" Win Update using the built-in troubleshooter tool then tried to install the kb again, same effect.
Then ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, which after 100% mentioned error 5 access denied, and that the DISM log file can be inspected. I ran sfc /scannow, which stopped after 61% telling me Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
My question is how to proceed.

The best option would be using a Restore Point before You started the updates. If Your restore points are corrupted, You could try running:
1) Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
2) Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
3) Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Installing kb3192392 on three different PC configurations caused IE to crash as soon as I tried opening multiple tabs. I was able to use System Restore on one, recovered the second from a clone I'd made before the update, and the third I'll have to do a refresh install using the last ISO :(

Many thanks for your reply.
Although I did not make a restore point before installing the kb, my PC makes one every week so I had some older ones. Tried 2, but was unsuccessful. I also tried the 3 DISM runs that you suggested, but gt the access denied message, as shown in my screenshot with RestoreHealth. So I am afraid I will have to install a clone.
In any case it looks like Microsoft's posting the so-called security only patches is just a ploy to keep people happy but since they don't work people are forced to do the monthly roll-ups, with all the telemetry that goes with it.

Thanks for replying :) Do you know where I could download an iso file from?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8

Just save as an ISO on Your desktop, mount it and run setep.exe as Admin saving all Your Programs and files. Bad part is having to install all the updates since November 2014 :(

Edit: If You make an install USB You can also First try running:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:E:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess

* Where "E" would be the drive letter of the USB, or DVD drive if you do it that way
.
** IF you're forced to do it from the ISO You,ll want to avoid the following updates as well :)

Thanks for your help, and sorry for the late reply.
Could you tell me where I can download the Win 8.1 iso file please?

Well, I finally downloaded the iso file & was ready to use it to try the RestoreHealth part. But before starting I decided to try installing the security patch because I had read an article (How to cautiously update Windows 7 and 8.1 machines | InfoWorld). So I tried that & it worked!! No idea why, but it did.
So thanks a lot for your support & sorry for the disturbance.
