Heading for a Windows 8.1 Windows Update nightmare?

    Would appreciate some assistance...

Just did a clean install of W8.1, and after activating Windows, headed to WU.
There are some 30+ updates dated 11/21/2014, and then there is one update dated 8/25/2016.
How can there be updates from 2014 on a brand new instal of Windows 8.1?

Also, the computer has been checking for updates for the last 2 hours, no updates have shown up yet.

    Thank for the help!!

    Windows 8.1

i just did a Wndows 8.1 installation, it took about 6-8 hours before it even started to find updates. there were a couple of hundred, which took a long time to install, with no access to the desktop. after that it seemed to be caught up with the old stuff.

you installed it in 2016, but it still needs the updates, because the disk/usb you used is clearly not updated often. i downloaded fresh from the website in case it was a newer version, it was not.
