Windows Update won't update

I have not been able to get Windows Update to work and it was just seeking updates without finding any. The intention was to get the computer fully working and then sell it as its not that old. Despite my best efforts I gave up and restored it to the factory settings which means it is currently running Windows 8

Unfortunately this has not resolved things and although it eventually found lots of updates it hangs on downloading them and nothing happens.

There are no viruses or malware.

I would like to upgrade it to Windows 10 but first need the updates to work so would appreciate some help with getting the updates working.

Not sure if this helps but I just did a clean install of 8.1. I turned of automatic updates . Installed KB3138615 (Windows Update Client). Checked for updates and in 5 minutes it found 227 updates. I selected to install them and the download seemed stuck at 0% for about 30 minutes and then it went to 90% immediately after 30 minutes. They are installing as I type this. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I was unable to get it working so resorted to resetting the computer back to factory settings and have now finally got it sorted. Thanks anyway.
