Update failed. Can't get into Windows

I'm helping a friend fix their laptop. It's an Acer with win 8.1
They told me that the laptop was updating (something about Windows 8.1) so she let it update and left her house. When she came back it was just a blank screen. After restating it, it says no Bootable media.

I have windows 10 on a thumb drive. Plug it in being it's Bootable media and I'm given options.

The 1st screen that pops up says that Windows was in the middle of installation and if I want to continue press no and restart (this bring you back to no Bootable media). If you want to preform a clean install press yes.
I press yes.
Now I'm given 2 more options. Repair windows or install.
Repair. Then troubleshoot.
Reset this pc or advanced options.
Reset> keep files.
"The drive where windows is installed is locked. Unlock the dire and try again" (not sure how to do that.
Clicking remove everything > "unable to rest your pc. A required partition is missing"

In advanced options, can't use system restore. I don't have a recovery image.
Startup repair> "couldn't repair your pc"
Can't go back to a previous build.

Install of Windows 10
Keep files- "the computer started using Windows Media installation media. Remove the media then restart."
Clean install- no partitions of the HD DVD can have windows on them.

What other options do I have? She wants to keep her files if possible.
Thanks for any help.

Download a copy of Kyhi's Bootable Rescue Disk. Burn it to a DVD or extract it to a USB flash drive. Boot from the DVD or flash drive and back up all her personal files to a portable hard drive. The rescue disk is a live version of Windows, it runs from the computer's memory. Nothing is written to her hard drive. When you shutdown, it is complete gone.

After you have all her files backed up, I would try to do a factory restore if she still has the recovery partition or a clean install.
