WIN 8/ 64 bit/Lenovo PC

until i can do the 8.1 update (and it's now 1/20/16) - will i get any ''updates' or is win 8 now w/o any 'protection'.
For whatever it's worth: I do have mcAvee Internet Security System and two maleware programs I do not click on any hyperlinks within emails; do no downloads/videos, etc, i can spot a 'spam' email from a bank, etc. etc.
thanks in advance ...

Don't be so scared,

All the hype is part of a scare tactic to get everyone to get windows 10..so then Microsoft has everybody right where they want them and can do all kinds of things behind the backs of users.. (Of course they always had been doing this)

You can do many things to force security on your "outdated" system..

Turn up UAC to full and look up and buy or just try out a program called sandboxie..

You can buy for very cheap little programs like Sphinx firewall - which stops all internet activity and asks you what you want to allow out of your computer and in as well..

There are many many more things to do..

Having windows 8 with no updates is no different than owning an old car- the only problem is the engine isn't as efficient with gas, and maybe just like Microsoft, they try to scare you like people can steal your car easier just because it's an older model car??

Well you can still buy a steering wheel lock

you only need to be concered with when you actually click or install things..

if something pops up - anywhere - on your screen or anything even like these messages (pictured below) don't click... (if you are going to be soo paranoid.)

you would then open Task Manager and "end task"

and yes, even your anti-virus programs McAfee has popup messages sometime.. you will probably never want to touch those and just do updates manually and things like that.. know what I mean? open up the McAfee program itself and update it from you actually clicking an update button on the program itself as opposed to a popup.. like so..

the problem though, is usually these are Legit.. and actually from the program.. but this is also one of the number 1 ways hackers try to get you to click things.. so.. it's a crapshoot..

things like..

you only need to be concered with when you actually click or install things.. don't plan on installing anything until i can do 8.1 (if i live thru it all LOL)
if something pops up - anywhere - on your screen or anything even like these messages (pictured below) don't click... (if you are going to be soo paranoid.) ''going to be'' ? already there- LOL (but my email aol does show that question while within their program & then try to exit -out by trying to go to another site w/o closing-out aol ..
you would then open Task Manager and "end task" ok that is good to know i can do that ! thanks!

Well, glad you enjoyed it..

I won't go any deeper into the scenarios, but just for future reference, this is only the very tip of the iceberg.. haha..

Unfortunately, in 2016, scams/schemes/pop-up/bloatware/malware/advertising fraud ... and just plain using the internet, there are so many crazy NEW ways that hackers (by the way, when I say hackers, really I mean it's people trying to use your computer to make money.. things like clicking ad's and making you install things that gather information from your computer and the way you use it.. or changing you to use a different search engine instead of Google or Yahoo, as opposed to people always thinking that everybody is stealing passwords or identity theft...)

We can get into that later when you get Windows 8.1 ha!

But I'm sure I'm not helping you feel more safe.. so I'll stop now! ha.

Keep the basic rule in mind, you are pretty secure if you just use your computer in a basic way.. (most people getting problems are people who are clicking and watching every random video on Facebook and/or Clicking on links and pictures in emails they get they think are from friends... )

so I tell you all this, and it may be a lot to handle, but remember, it's more geared towards people who actively install programs from the internet or get emails that want you to click on things.. or watch videos.. or click to read articles or documents from an email or webpage that you shouldn't be on in the first place.

And I have a feeling you probably aren't doing those things..

see what I mean? think like that.. and you'll be pretty safe.

I promise this will be my last "scary" post of bad things out there !

Keep the basic rule in mind, you are pretty secure if you just use your computer in a basic way.. (most people getting problems are people who are clicking and watching every random video on Facebook and/or Clicking on links and pictures in emails they get they think are from friends... ) i know about that cute little ploy ! i click on no 'hyperlinks' in any emails even when appearing to be from 'friends' - certainly not ''warnings' from a known bank, insurance company, credit card company that they will impound my car if i don't update my account so click here' type of ploy !

so I tell you all this, and it may be a lot to handle, but remember, it's more geared towards people who actively install programs from the internet or get emails that want you to click on things.. or watch videos.. or click to read articles or documents from an email or webpage that you shouldn't be on in the first place.

And I have a feeling you probably aren't doing those things.. you're right !

see what I mean? think like that.. and you'll be pretty safe. ok thanks!

I promise this will be my last "scary" post of bad things out there !
it's ok i'd rather be 'warned & educated' - you're not scaring me ! thanks again so very much !

I've posted links to this thread I started on MSFN. I'm surprise there really isn't more interest, but there are so few users of Windows 8 out there.
